Episode was too long and honestly the show didn't breathe enough because of all the music constantly playing. I get it...it's a show about rock n roll but I bet there were 50+ songs played in two hrs, it was simply overload
The show itself though seems interesting and will probably be pretty solid. I like a lot of the casting. Cannavale is great, but I particularly liked Dice Clay, Bo Dietl, and Olivia Wilde, she totally has that 70s model, studio 54, Warhol girl look.
I am skeptical about Jagger being so heavily involved, but this is his wheelhouse so maybe I'm off base. But I'll never forget reading Craig Ferguson's book and he said Jagger commissioned him to write a movie just like 'As Good As It Gets' for Mick to star in. This is why I don't trust him.

i just hope it doesnt turn into Treme where bands play 2-3 whole songs during an episode. the good news from that was i would get to shave off 10-12 minutes from an episode with my DVR FF button

And I couldn't tell if the building collapse was real or all in Richie's head but after watching the "Inside the Episode" it was real and based on a real event - Mercer Arts Center collapse in August 1973.
Yeah, my immediate reaction was they're taking a little license with the Mercer collapse. If it had happened the way Vinyl depicts it there would have been hundreds of deaths. I had read about it in several books about the beginning of the NYC punk scene and I knew in my mental picture of it that it happened in the daytime, not in the middle of a Dolls gig.
I like the show a lot but for the sake of my wife enjoying it I'm trying hard not to nitpick things like that and certain little anachronisms that I've noticed.
The whole thing with Andrew Dice Clay's character was a fun ride. "Face your fears... face your fears..." "Yeah, man... I got it." It's got a little bit of Boogie Nights appeal to it.

I read they didnt greenlight the whole 10 so they went balls out on the pilot. That looked like it cost a fortune to make.
Hell of a first episode.

Pretty much agree with the consensus here, good episode, little too long. I also agree with a few others that there were too many songs that took over entire scenes.
Glad next week is only 1 hour, should make story tighter.

Bobby Cannavale hammed it up a bit but all in all not bad. Not great but not bad either. Will be interesting to see what kind of music they feature. The pilot was too much soul and blues for my taste. Everything from a Chris Kenner look alike singing "I Like it Like That" to Bo Diddley.
Juno Temple has always been an actress who I find unappealing when she first appears on screen but somehow manages to become pleasing to the eye over the course of the movie. I’ve seen her in a about a half dozen things and that has always been the case.
They're going to have to be careful if they pursue an Andy Warhol storyline that it doesn't become a caricature of the times. Although it would be nice to see Lou Reed and John Cale show up.

They're impressing me just by name-checking people like Suicide and The Good Rats. That's a good sign to me. It tells me that somebody who really knows music is involved and it's not cliché surface-level bullshite like Rock Star or something.

The depiction of Peter Grant was off. He was a huge man, not the smaller stature of the one they used. He was well over 6 foot tall and at least 350 lbs. That was part of what made him so intimidating.

Enjoyed Andrew Dice Clay. Didn't realize he was going to be in this. For a little while, anyway.

I liked it, good to see real musicians portrayed and not made up names. I won't pretend I know all the underground guys but by looking up the IMDB there's a lot of them coming up. (Gram Parsons, Stephen Stills, already had Plant & Bonzo, John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page, Otis Redding, Bowie, David Crosby, Alice Cooper, Elvis, Buddy Holly, Lennon) All just in season 1.

I actually think the fact the show got details of the New York Dolls so right (that was a pretty damn authentic looking David Johansen) and the details of Led Zeppelin so wrong to be kind of endearing. And if it betrays where this shows loyalties lie, then I'm gonna be more interested in it (there was even a Cool Herc shoutout at the hip hop street party).
Peter Grant was a huge, frightening man. Robert Plant is also known as a genuinely nice guy (even then!), so it was weird to have him confront the record exec. Still, I like that they don't seem to care so much about the old dinosaur acts of the time, and are looking at the burgeoning acts instead. That's a good way to avoid the pitfalls of simple nostalgia. I am worried that the exec is a little too prophetic (of course, the writer has the benefit of hindsight). And if he's so good at nailing every great future trend, as we know he is, why is his label sucking wind?

Peter Grant was 6'5", well over 300, and had crazy eyes. He was a bouncer and a professional wrestler(!) before he became a band manager. What made him so intimidating wasn't just that he yelled and threatened and controlled one of the biggest bands of the era, it was that he was physically imposing while doing all of that, a lot like how LBJ would intentionally loom over people while speaking to them.

Zeppelin weren't exactly 'dinosaurs ' in 1973.
Posted on 2/16/16 at 12:05 pm to Sayre
Zeppelin was in their prime then, thus the label wanting to sign them as their crown jewel. I don't think he meant Zeppelin was a dinosaur. I think what the poster meant was that they're primarily not after the established big bands of the era - it seems like the label is trying to sign punk and glam bands which they would have been at the forefront of.
