Netflix has secured the rights to produce a new show based on The Witcher series of books written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The writer will act as a creative consultant on the series, with the director of the intro videos for The Witcher games, Tomas Baginski, set to direct at least one episode each season.

...Although The Witcher games are better known internationally than the source material, they’re based on a series of eight books and draw from various parts of the works for the deep and lengthy story of Geralt of Rivea’s life. They focus on the eponymous Witcher, who from a young age was trained and chemically modified to hunt monsters in a grim, medieval world.

With a cult following in Eastern Europe and Russia, Sapkowski has been surprised by the success of The Witcher games and didn’t profit much from them, having sold the rights to CD Projekt Red wholesale when originally approached. However, he seems much more excited by the prospect of the Netflix series, saying in a statement that he was “thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaption of [his] stories,” and that it would be “staying true to the source material and themes [he had] spent over thirty years writing.”

I don't know. The article says it's a co-production with a Polish company, but the show runners and people in charge are from here and are tied to North American shows like Daredevil and The Expanse.

ETA: This seems like it'd be too expensive to film an action series this way, but they could do what they did with Norsemen. That's a Norwegian comedy that they filmed in both Norwegian and English so there's no dubbing.

How faithful are they staying to the adaptation? Game of Thrones or Chronicle of Narina?

The primary showrunner has made comments online that she was reading the books and planned on being really faithful to them, but I guess we'll see.

With it being on Netflix I have high hopes.

There are more details in the article I linked.

Netflix hasn’t revealed which of the stories the series will focus on, though it has pegged Sean Daniel and Jason Brown (The Expanse) to executive produce. They claim that the show will follow an “unconventional family,” of characters. Players of the games will have some insight there, as Geralt does have a ragtag group of friends who help him on his adventures.

I've never read the books. I did play the games though. How true was the game series to the books? There were parts of the game that were creepy as hell...like the 3 demon sisters. Still creeps me out lol. Great game

The game did a pretty great job of nailing the world and characters of the books both in terms of feel and personality. Geralt is way more powerful and badass in the games of course, though he's still a really strong character in the books as well. The hit Geralt's personality pretty well though.

Yen is much less likeable and more of a bitch to Geralt in the books though, with Triss being more of a side character as well, though they transferred her characters personality well.

I’ve read most of the first book. Don’t remember much but I think Geralt is a better character in the games. The deadpan voice and delivery does so much. I feel like the first book doesn’t have quite the world building there yet.

I'm on book three and you can tell he grows as a writer as he does more books so they get better.

I know game 3 at least was a sequel to the books I didn't play the first two games as they were computer only and I stick to console.

For the most part I agree that the games follows the books very very well. The only liberties they take really are with the Triss and Yen relationships in regards to Geralt.

The games are glorified fan fiction compared to the novels.
