Music board: Matthew Bellamy is an underappreciated talent

Yeah, I know that Muse is a big band with international success. But I'm starting to believe that this guy might be the most talented rock musician of his generation.
For one thing, he is basically a concert pianist:
live performance
Playing Exoegensis Part II in the studio
He is also a great guitarist:
Recording the Guiding Light solo.
That is one of my favorite things ever. He does an impossible run in one take and then nails an artificial harmonic at the end of it - even surprising himself at how awesome it was.
His songwriting is highly accessible yet pretty fricking complicated sometimes.
He is great on stage.
He is a tech guy - I'm pretty sure he's the one that designs the weird hybrid guitars you see in concert (and in that Guiding Light video).

Well, he has sold about a billion copies, so its hard to be unappreciated. Just checking his wiki page, I'll quote:
He's pretty highly praised. Total Guitar called him "the Hendrix of his generation" and I can't imagine higher praise.
I don't particularly like Muse, but I respect them and especially their musicianship. I'm not a particular fan, but even as a non-fan, I recognize their talent and have no objections to the many plaudits they have received.
quote:
Bellamy was ranked #19 on Gigwise's list of The 50 Greatest Guitarists Ever.[5] Total Guitar readers voted Bellamy #29 on a list of the Top 100 Guitarists of All Time. Bellamy's riff from "Plug In Baby" was #13 in Total Guitar's poll of the Top 100 Riffs of All Time.[6]
In April 2005, Kerrang! magazine ranked him #28 in their 50 Sexiest People In Rock poll but following an influx of letters to Kerrang!, the magazine changed their decision and ranked him #1 in their unofficial 2008 poll. Cosmopolitan also chose him as the sexiest rocker of 2003 and 2004. NME Magazine voted him the 14th Greatest Rock 'n' roll Hero of all time, ahead of John Lennon and Bob Dylan. Bellamy also won the Sexiest Male Award at the 2007 NME Awards,[7] He won again in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Bellamy, however, declared himself "too short to be sexy" (he is 5'7"), and said the award should have gone to Dom Howard, Muse's drummer.
On 26 September 2008, the University of Plymouth awarded the members of Muse an honourary doctorate degree in arts for their work in the field of music.[8]
In the January 2010 edition of Total Guitar, Bellamy was named Guitarist of the Decade and was proclaimed to be "the Hendrix of his generation".[9] In the Guinness Book of World Records 2010, Bellamy is credited as holding the world record for most guitars smashed on a tour. His record, 140, was set during the Absolution Tour. In April 2010, Bellamy was named the eighth best front man of all time by the readers of Q.[10] In December 2010, readers of MusicRadar voted Bellamy the 9th Greatest Lead Singer of all time

Yeah, I mean a lot of the polls you list there are more popularity polls than anything else. But I'm not saying he is UNappreciated. Rather, despite all of his plaudits, I think he is still UNDERappreciated.
I was very recently guilty of that myself. I went from only vaguely knowing about Muse, to kind of getting into them, to REALLY getting into them - to finally realizing that this guy is on another plane.
I mean, I really do think there's a chance he is the greatest rock talent of his generation. Who would qualify ahead of him?

I wouldn't really call it ahead of him, but I do think we tend to look for different things out of our rock n rollers. I'm in the Neil Young school of passion over precision, and while I respect the virtuosos, they really aren't my cup of tea. I'm far more drawn to guys like Jack White, Spencer Krug, or Dan Auerbach. I also respect a Thom Yorke, even though I'm not a big Radiohead fan. I admire his willingness to push envelopes.
I think he's a legit virtuoso. I just feel that his music fails to speak to me in any meaningful way. I'm glad that it speaks to other people.

I'm not big on virtuosity for the sake of virtuosity. But Bellamy, IMO, gives off the impression of just being a rock guy with MASSIVE ability lurking just beneath the surface to be unleashed at any time.

I was finally forced to listen to the new album this weekend. It was exactly as I imagined it to be.

I haven't heard it, I'll admit. Like I said, I like the messy bands. then again, I don't have the new Drive by Truckers yet, and its driving me insane.

I've given them a really big chance (based on your recommendation). I'm having a hard time seeing what the attraction is.
I like the song "New Low" by Middle Class Rut.

You might like this band if you haven't heard them Baloo
Not the best audio quality. I saw them life in New Orleans and thought they put out some decent music.
Wintersleep - Laser Beams

And by the same band
JT this one might be more of your speed
I could seriously see Hetfield writing a really similar song if not an almost identical one.
Wintersleep - Orca
Edited to correct song name
