I’ll never forget being at my grandparents house growing up at times and my grandfather always had to watch it. That opening theme would drive me crazy. But when I got older and the re runs would come on the Hallmark channel I’d check it out and I actually enjoyed it.

Not as good as Little House on the Prairie.

Waltons was the OG rural / country family show. Plus, young Methuselah was partial to Mary Ellen and Erin.

It had only been a year and a half since the great rural purge on CBS, when they cancelled The Beverly Hillbillies and its spin-offs, the last Mayberry spin-off, and Hee Haw. The only remaining rural show was Gunsmoke. The Waltons was a huge departure for CBS while they were building their "Tiffany Network" empire.

Richard Thomas, the actor that played John Boy is my second, or third, cousin, I never remember which. His dad and my grandmother were first cousins, maybe that makes us absolutely nothing. Anyways, he is a super nice guy and his dad was always the center of attention at family reunions. One of those people that just lived an incredible life and always had all the stories when visiting.

I don't really have anything to add, I never really watched the show.

I quit watching it after I graduated high school in 1977, so I missed the last couple of years. Have watched reruns on Hallmark with my 84 year old mom since then, and need to re-watch the whole thing again.

Mary Ellen was pretty hot, but I really fell for Miss Olivia. She had a beautiful face, and seemed like the best mom ever.

Will Greer was an awesome actor. Remembered him from some movies before The Walton's. Was Sheriff Wyatt Earp in 1950's Winchester '73. He was good in his his role in the Steve McQueen movie, The Reivers (1969) IMDb. In this film McQueen's character talks a teenage kid into going to Memphis in his boss's car, while Greer's character, the owner, and McQueen's character's boss, was out of town. It's a pretty entertaining coming of age story for the kid.

Also remembered Greer from tons of old Gunsmoke and Bonanza episodes, and my favorite role of his in Jeremiah Johnson (1972).

He was in Bandolero (1968) trailer on IMDb with James Stewart, Dean Martin, Raquel Welch and George Kennedy.

Ellen Corby, who played Grandma Ester, had done a bunch of straitlaced, no nonsense roles like Humphrey Bogart's secretary in Sabrina (1954). She was on Lassie sold Barney a bad car on The Andy Griffith Show, and was in Don Notts masterpiece The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966). She made another Mayberry appearance in Gomer Pyle USMC.

She was great in at keeping Granpa on the straight and narrow, but you know her grandma character had a great time being married to him.

Ralph Waite had played a bunch of bad guys in westerns like Lawman (1971) IMDb with Burt Lancaster, Robert Ryan, Lee J. Cobb, and Robert Duvall. Chato's Land (1972) IMDb with Charles Bronson, Jack Palance, and James Whitmore. His role in 1972's The Magnificent Seven Ride!isn't huge, but his death is the reason Lee Van Cleef's character recruits six other guys to fight Mexicans. Was in another western called Kid Blue (1973) IMDb with Dennis Hopper, Warren Oates, Peter Boyle, and Ben Johnson.

I think the first thing I saw Waite in was one of the best ever movies, Cool Hand Luke (1967) IMDb with Paul Newman, George Kennedy, Strother Martin, Dennis Hopper , Wayne Rogers, Harry Dean Stanton, and Ron Howard's dad, Rance, who played the uncredited part of a sheriff.
