Watched it like 15 years ago, thought it was a great movie because i LOVE music.
Watched it again last night and i cried like 15 times. My late dad was a teacher and drivers ed teacher. reminded of him.
Now i have 2 small kids and the thought of one of them having a physical handicap, but the thankfulness they dont, hit me while watching. The stories of him helping students along the way was super heartwarming and of course the ending is so incredible.
Hoping i'm not the only one who feels like this.

If you can make it through Dreyfuss singing Beautiful Boy to his son without crying, you're a soulless husk.

Watched it in 6th grade for a homework assignment. Excellent film.

I don't think I've seen it since it was in theaters, but I loved it back then.

I think his character was a good teacher and a horrible dad due to his issues with his son's disability.
I really liked this simple movie. But I left disliking disliking the dad even with the ending.
Also, I was hoping for a better opus at the end. It was a bit too modernized to me, but I'm really just complaining for the sake of complaining there.
Movie definitely has some feels in it.

This is me with movies like this.
The ones that got me:
- Lou Russ's funeral.
- Where he teaches the class about Beethoven's 7th after finding out Cole is deaf.
- Signing Beautiful Boy
- When his wife loses her shite over not being able to communicate with Cole.
- The ending.

All I remember about that movie was that it didn't make my crush on Jean Louisa Kelly get any better.

Just watched it for the first time a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it. Everyone knows a teacher like that.

Pretty cool moment too when the girl he helped not give up the clarinet early in his tenure went on to become governor.

Oh man, Mr. Holland using that funeral to prove a point to Mr. Stadler....then seeing the grown up Mr. Stadler at the end. I mean, that was something.

Given that her mentor lost his job over the music program getting cut, you think she would've done him a solid on funding since she was the governor.

I've only seen it once but when it came out Mr. Holland came across as an arse.
1) He tells his deaf son, you wouldn't understand what it meant that John Lennon was killed because you're deaf and the son is like, you think I'm a dummy and Mr. Holland is basically yeah...because music is everything. Sucks for you.
2) Then he teacher-pedo chases a 13 year old as if he's about to ditch his wife and deaf son to run away with her.
3) And takes him a lifetime to write a trite and boring opus.
Plus he's arrogant and dismissive of most everyone while he's the loser.

The stuff with HS girl definitely hasn't aged well. Would've been so much better if she was just a new young teacher or secretary.

Really great movie about the type of teachers that don't exist anymore: those that dedicate themselves to their students.

First of all, she was at least 17. '
Second of all, it wasn't a romantic thing at all. She might have had a crush on him, but Holland saw in Rowena everything he had and lost. He had potential. He could have gone to New York to make it. Instead, he became a teacher and raised a family. Rowena represents the life he could have had- the life where he moves to New York and becomes a famous musician/composer. He wants Rowena to leave town and make something of herself, while she can. He doesn't want her to become what he did. Although he finds teaching fulfilling, a part of him longs for more.
