I've been binging The Office and I finally got to the Pam/Jim wedding 2-parter last night. It was even better than I remembered. I can't believe how precocious Mindy Kaling was in helping to create such a brilliant show.

LINK

When Michael interrupted Jim's speech at the rehearsal dinner to save Jim from the pregnancy gaffe, I really lost it for several minutes:

quote:

These two people, they're living together, they're having lots of consensual sex--
Mema: They were living together?
Michael: Yes. Yes they were living together. Yes and you know what? You can't expect them to be careful every time. Because, frankly, it's just a different sensation.
Jim: Michael.
Michael: When you c-- well? Am I wrong? They say it's not different, but it's a different sensation.
Jim: Oh, my God. Please.
Michael: When you use something to block-- I think everybody knows what I am talking about. It's not necessarily different for the woman--
Pam: Michael.
Michael: ...but it's different for the-- ok. Ok.
Pam: Michael. Stop.
Michael: Alright. My point is I said what I wanted to say and Mema, I hope you heard every word.

Yes, of course. It means unusually advanced or mature in development. At an age when most aspiring Hollywood people would be hoping still for just a break, she had had a major hand in creating one of the flagship shows of her generation (presumably due to recognized talent and not just nepotism or whatever). I suppose this goes ditto for B.J. Novak (I keep wondering if he was just that good or if he just had a great agent. He is one of only 5 or 6 actors that gets a credit in the musical opening to the show - even if he hasn't appeared on screen for many episodes.)

I actually wasn't a big fan of the wedding episode. It was just kind of lame, especially the wedding party dance, which was a fad at the time. It makes sense that Mindy played a big part writing that episode because she sucks.

It's a top ten episode for me. I thought it was that awesome.

Watched it recently with the old lady and she liked it too. It's got just the right amount of funny, sweet, stupid, etc. And the wedding dance was whatever to me...I had no idea what it was at the time, so it was just random to me. But I remember thinking it would be something Michael would do or be a part of. And then when I realized it was a viral video, it made even more sense.

And it made even more sense that Jim and Pam sort of expected that and did their Plan B and got married at the Falls, so the church ceremony didn't even really matter.

How can you not love the whole subplot of Dwight and Pam's friend Isabel?

Maybe I need to rewatch the whole episode. I just remember that dance and jim and pam on the boat. The Toast scene that someone posted earlier was good.

Yes.

Yes. I like the shot of Michael's completely heartfelt teary eyes right after Jim kisses the bride. Also Andy legit crying during the rehearsal dinner.

But even it was funny. Oscar's dance is fantastic...and then Kevin falls. I also like the continued meme of the overt sexualization of Phyllis and Bob Vance's marriage.

I love the way that they let you think Andy just pulled his groin or whatever when he did the split during the dance off...and then once they reveal he tore his scrotum, it's essentially a contest to say "scrotum" as many times as possible in the episode.

Even the part where they are still in Scranton is gold. Michael breaks up a brewing cat fight between Pam and Angela by literally pinching Angela. When she shrieks "he pinched me", Michael just says "noooo".

What about when Pam calls Jim at midnight to take Andy to the hospital for the scrotum, and it turns out Jim is getting drunk with Dwight and Michael. So she says "so you're just gonna hang up now?" and Jim says "no, let's talk for a long time".

It's a good episode, but nowhere near my personal top 10. I could easily name 10 episodes from seasons 1 and 2 that are better.

Season 1 is so vastly underrated. Out of the 6 episodes, 4 of them are classics.

Precisely. It's possible that they are much funnier after watching seasons 2-4 first, but they are definitely classics in my mind. Diversity Day and The Basketball Game are my top 2 from season 1 followed by Healthcare Coverage and The Alliance. The Pilot and the Hot Girl are nothing to sneeze at either.

I argue that almost every episode in the first 2 seasons are classics (and most of the 3rd.)

For me, the thing the 1st season suffers from a bit is the literal copying of the British version.

Would be my favorite line of the episode if not for Dwight's line to Michael as he's pigging out on breakfast:

Michael: What's wrong with you?
Incredulous Dwight: I'm ravenous after a night of lovemaking.

I still haven't seen that yet, but I do own it on DVD though.

I love the early seasons, but I do feel like season one (especially) is more cringey awkward and uncomfortable than funny. And that's not to say it isn't funny, because it's hilarious. But it felt like they were just trying to push Michael as far as they could past the lines, and at several points you legit wonder how he hasn't been fired or disciplined numerous times for crossing those lines. Once the character settled down a good bit, the show got into an amazing groove.

That's good, but I like his quick rant about her: she's a dental hygienist from Carbondale and she makes love like one. She's a bumpkin.

Yeah, that wasn't random. The British version is definitely more of a lean to the Curb-style cringeyness. You should watch it - it's arguably the greatest show of all time. I am truly impressed that the Americans found their own voice and ran with it so wonderfully. This binge I've been on has put the show into my top 3 of all time (I think I'm just about to hit the point where it started to go downhill, but I'm hoping it won't seem that way to me this time around.) But losing Michael will be a blow - it's just one of the greatest characters of all time.

Season 4 is also one of my favorite seasons but the show goes from a true documentary feel to a tv show with characters. Season 4 especially those hour long episodes were all amazing.
