quote:i agree. To much unbelievable shite going on. the bomb drop at the end, he drops it within 10 feet, pulls up, drags his wing in the water with nothing happening to his flight path. gross.
Love the idea of it, but too much CGI. Looks like a video game.

I'm fascinated by all things WWII, I'm looking forward to it.

its not just that, its one of the most important. it was the first naval battle ever fought in human history were the two fleets never actually saw or shot at one another. it was fought entirely through aircraft carriers and completely ushered in a new era of naval warfare
That would be the Coral Sea. For the first no ship to ship gunfire and aircraft carriers duking it out that is.
Hardly anyone remembers the Battle of Coral Sea (the Aussies do) but it was a vital strategic victory for the Allies in the Pacific and we probably would not have won at Midway if we had not fought at Coral Sea.
We lost one fleet carrier (the elderly Lexington) and the Japanese lost one light carrier but two of Japan's fleet carriers were heavily damaged and missed Midway (we somehow got the Yorktown fixed in record time so it could fight at Midway). That gave the US parity with the Japanese in terms of airpower with the planes from Midway itself added to the equation.
Coral Sea didn't "save" Australia from imminent invasion, the Japanese Army wanted nothing to do with that while they were still fighting in China. It did save New Guinea and set the stage for the toughest land battles in World War II.
New Guinea was, and still is, a hellhole. Everything that isn't a mountain or jungle is a swamp. A Japanese regiment was essentially wiped out attempting to retreat through a mangrove swamp by disease and crocodiles. It was a lovely place to fight a war.
The Aussies threw poorly trained militia battalions against the Japanese invasion and fought them to a standstill. It would take the arrival of the 7th division and the elite 6th division from North Africa (along with American support) to finally retake New Guinea.
Along with Guadalcanal, the fighting in New Guinea and the battle of the Coral Sea effectively put paid to Japanese expansion in the Pacific South West and allowed Australian and American forces to begin the island hopping counter offensive. Not to mention setting the table for Midway.

Looks a lot like Pearl Harbor with Affleck and Hartnett
Will still check it out for the story, remember seeing Midway in the theater a long time ago.

How are we supposed to get time for the love triangle?
There won't be one. Mandy Moore is literally the only female in the main cast and she's married to one of the main characters. Both of them are non-fictional. Lt. Dick and Anne Best were married and had a kid before the attack on Pearl Harbor ever happened.

at 1:10 "The Japanese will own the west coast. Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles will burn."
we probably should've let it.

Nothing in this trailer makes me want to shell out money to see this movie. If you want great movies covering these events watch Tora, Tora, Tora and Midway back-to-back. Both available for cheap rent on Amazon Prime.
ETA: and if you like a love story with your WWII movie rent Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo.

WTF, is this an XBOX one commercial or something. Looks horribly fake.

Other than the goofy love stories in the background plots, I am definitely going to see this one. Midway was one of a kind.

It was a sarcastic swipe at the Pearl Harbor movie.

I did not realize how stacked that cast is. Can’t wait

but it just looks like Pearl Harbor in the trailer and less like Tora, Tora, Tora.

Why does there ALWAYS have to be this ham-fisted love story shoved into this a-hole's movies?
Boooo!
Will still see it. The original is my favorite war movie ever.

This looks like it could be decent
I love the old Midway movie. tons of young and older actors, and a lot of the fight footage is from actual dog fights and bombings.
And then my favorite quote from Tora Tora Tora :

The USS Nautilus SS-168 was on the far side of the Japanese fleet in between the battleship Kirishima and cv Kaga. The Nautilus fired torpedoes at the Kirishima.
USS Nautilus was attacked that day a number of times by the Japanese and this would lead to the famous Arashi chasing her and finally returning to the fleet, which lead to the USS Enterprise group following the Arashi to the Japanese fleet.

Wish someone would do a great big movie on the sub war, don’t know how though, so much to cover
Heroism like you wouldn’t believe, a lot of the greatest heroes are still out there

Read Silent Victory by Clay Blair
Subs played the major role in the victory in the Pacific war and it is not covered much.

Roger in the house.
I am concerned that this will be a flop and a cheesy attempt at such a great movie. But I will go see it on opening night.
