I'm looking forward to it, even if the rest of you aren't. I love military history movies and this looks like it will be PURE military history.

My grandfather was a dive bomber pilot in WW2. Although he wasn't at Midway, it's still going to bring back a ton of memories for me while I watch it. I'm looking forward to it, even though I know I'll probably be a bit choked up watching it the whole time.

Love the idea of it, but too much CGI. Looks like a video game.

I just don't like the look of it.

There are so many good docs on YouTube about Midway.

And the old movie.

Midway is odds-wise, the greatest US victory in our history of warfare...it even beats out the Revolutionary War in terms of odds of us winning.

We had just been decimated at Pearl Harbor 7 months earlier but with a makeshift depleted Navy we absolutely crushed the Imperial Navy which was considered the best in the world at the time.

The war would take years longer as Japan dug-in and fought a defensive battle from island to island but they lost EVERYTHING at Midway...all their hopes and dreams of a Japanese Empire that controlled the Pacific. The war was essentially over before it even began.

So since it's such a very important battle for the US and a globally important battle...it deserves respect and to be done right...I hope this movie proves my initial inclinations wrong...but it just looks like Pearl Harbor in the trailer and less like Tora, Tora, Tora.

On the Battle of Midway:

“The most stunning and decisive blow in the history of naval warfare”
— John Keegan, Military Historian

I’m sure it’ll be a fine movie and i don’t mind the modern CGI special effects. I’m just burnt out on WWII. There are other historical stories out there to tell.

Why does there ALWAYS have to be this ham-fisted love story shoved into this a-hole's movies? Midway is one of the greatest Naval battles in history. There are a thousand great true stories that go along with it. There is no need to invent characters and create new drama when the actual event is filled with plenty of both.

I'm just gonna end up watching the battle scenes on YouTube after the DVD comes out.

Oh, and nothing says "thrilling movie about one of America's proudest moments" like seeing a bunch of Australian, British, and Irish actors in all of the lead roles.

its not just that, its one of the most important. it was the first naval battle ever fought in human history were the two fleets never actually saw or shot at one another. it was fought entirely through aircraft carriers and completely ushered in a new era of naval warfare

and this movie is going to completely botch it

The storyline looks like trash.
They are literally doing Pearl Harbor again in these trailers.

Gotta try to lure the female demographic in, bruh. At least this love story is real, however, as Ed Skrein is playing Lt. Dick Best - the real-life Dauntless pilot who was single-handily responsible for sinking the Japanese aircraft carrier Akagi. He also severely damaged the aircraft carrier Hiryu later that day. Mandy Moore is playing his wife, Anne.

This movie is going to be stupidly bad. Everyone just needs to accept it.

Yeah.

I can see that.

But this is my favorite battle of any war. . .so I'll probably see it on opening night, and a couple more times after.

Roland Emmerich directed the movie with the best pre battle speech in American cinematic history and y’all are in here questioning his ability to deliver a love letter to one of our finest military victories?

Roland Emmerich has made some stinkers to be sure, but he has also given us popcorn entertainment like Stargate, Independence Day, The Patriot and 2012. I also think his period drama Anonymous was one of the most underrated films of 2011.

This was mentioned in the thread for the first trailer but it looks like they're covering Pearl Harbor, the Doolittle Raid, and the lead-up to + the actual Midway battle.

That's a lot of ground to plow.

How are we supposed to get time for the love triangle?
