with all of the up and down reviews... my summation is simple. If it turns my 8yr old son into a superman fan then I am content.

According to rotten tomatoes, Man of Steel will be critically considered the fourth best Superman film. Yeah the one with Christopher Nolan's name on it.

This was supposed to be the Dark Knight of the big blue Boy Scout and it looks to be more of the "X Men The Last Stand" of the franchise.

That's the way most movies should be reviewed.

What didn't you like about it?

It was boring. I have no connection to the source material so I don't know (or care really) if it mirrored the source material. IMO, the movie was boring as shite. Me and a friend go back and forth on this and I've watched the movie three times just to make sure my viewing experience wasn't ruined by something other than the movie.

The problem is that you were not invested in the source material. The graphic novel is fantastic and the movie was very true to it. It was heavy on dialogue because there was a lot of character development.

I shouldn't have to be. A movie should stand on its own.

So I was right. The "negatives" were in fact positives.

I usually never listen to the critics so i'm not gonna start now, can't wait to see this in a couple of hours.

The differences in reviews are interesting though, i've ready extremely boring to best movie of the summer and even better then The Avengers

Most people consider The Avengers or TDK to be the best superhero movies ever. Man of Steel tops them. No loose ends, it's tone is it own. Solid performances from the supporting cast. Cavil is the Man of Steel.

Then by that logic every time we have a a new super hero movie or a reboot we need an origin story which I don't think is the case. There's no reason to re-tell an origin when there is source material out there that you can learn about prior to seeing it.

Agree to disagree I guess.

So in order to truly enjoy a movie you should be required to go read the source material first? You think that's what the flmmakers want?

And yes, when you reboot a series I think you should tackle the origin story. You shouldn't assume that people are coming in with prior knowledge.

For some comic book movies, yes. There is no reason to spend an hour of a movie retelling the origin of Superman Batman, The Hulk, Iron Man, etc. It's been done before and 90% of the people that will pay money to see the movie know it.

You could take that hour and put it into the real story and expand on parts that people aren't aware of. In BB, why not spend time developing a back story for Scarecrow?

1) We'd never had a movie that went into detail about how Bruce becomes Batman
2) Why would they replace the origin story of Batman with the backstory of a character that wasn't even the main villain?

We were talking about Watchmen. Not any of the other titles that have been made numerous times.

And each reboot needs a backstory to tell the entire story. For some people (kids mostly) this will be their first introduction to live action _______ (insert superhero here). They will need the backstory. You can't assume they know everything or expect them to read the source material. The movie should stand on its own.

Also, all these drastic reboots getting done now need to set the tone for the series by giving the backstory

Its vital.

Few moviegoers knew the origin of iron man, Thor, captain America, or even batman in much detail. It is necessary for the studio goal of having people watch, understand, and like the movie. The whole reason why comic book movies are making so much money lately is they are successfully marketing comic movies to a wide audience.
