It makes no sense to call her the Mistress of Evil when she wasn't evil in the first film. I hated that movie because Disney changed one of their most iconic villains into a "fairy godmother" of sorts.

that's what I was thinking, she didn't end up very evil at the end of the first one

I think they were trying reimagine the character, like "Wicked" does with the Wizard of Oz story. I liked it.

ETA: Nothing to see here. Move along.

I enjoyed the different take on it, but I don't think another movie is necessary.

I honestly liked the first one, but I love stories which shift perspective. The villain of one tale is the hero to someone else. all that matters is your point of view.

That said, I'm not sure it really needed a sequel. Nor was it popular enough to demand one.

I loved Wicked, and I don't mind reimagining the character, but it was done badly. She started out good, turned evil for a while (when she cursed Aurora), then apparently felt bad about it and turned good at the end.

The main difference between Wicked and Maleficent is that the former didn't change the story, it just told it from the viewpoint of the villain. Elphaba still did some bad things and she still wanted those damn shoes and was willing to kidnap Dorothy to get them. Maleficent went totally off the rails after the scene where she curses the baby.

First movie made over $750 million so there’s definitely a market for it.

Guess Disney released they didn’t have a billion dollar movie scheduled for October of this year so they moved it up.
