Yeah I know there's been a ton of threads about it. I'm not getting into the movie, and I'm no "fan" of Tom Cruise, but ignoring all the weirdness how is he not considered a great actor? Not DDL or Gary Oldman level but he nails everything. And for range Brad What's In The Box Pitt got pissed because Cruise was such a better actor in an actual Pitt vehicle. In his prime I've never seen that kind of charisma on screen. Thoughts?

This film was PTA approaching the greatness/weirdness apex of Lynch.
And the performances he got out of the actors was stunning. I watched that film essentially in awe of how good the acting was.
And I don't think there is much debate, either this film or Collateral is Cruise's best and everything else he's done is vying for position after those 2.

Also true. As well as Last Samurai. He doesn't even drink but his portrayal of real DTs was almost scary

I agree with you.
Tom Cruise is to actors what McDonald’s is to hamburgers - McDonald’s isn’t the best hamburger but it’s consistent and damn if you don’t like it anyway. That’s meant as a compliment to Cruise.

Tom Cruise has been a great actor for decades now, he's had few bombs over his career and countless blockbusters. The fact that he does so many of his own stunts just adds to his credibility. Most A list actors don't even want to risk breaking a finger nail. Tom is hanging off airplanes and rappelling down the Burj Khalifa. I don't know why Hollywood has never thrown him and Jackie Chan into a movie together.

The Boogie Nights reunion of the courtship of John C. Reily and Melora Walters was great acting.
In fact most of the cast is from Boogie Nights.
Whether it succeeded or not, PTA was obviously aiming for transcendent greatness by the diverse reactions people have to the film...it's not an easy film to swallow. It's not Lynchian but it's also not just Boogie Nights redux...straight and easy to make sense. It challenges the viewer but not in a weird Lynch - Andy Warhol way.

It's hard to believe, looking back, that American Beauty got all the awards attention that year and Magnolia was just kind of out there.
Also, 1999 was an amazing year for film (in no particular order):
Magnolia
American Beauty
Fight Club
Being John Malcovich
Toy Story 2
Election
The Matrix
The Insider
Eyes Wide Shut
The Green Mile
Man on the Moon
Office Space
October Sky
The Sixth Sense
Go
Talented Mr. Ripley
The Iron Giant
Run Lola Run
The South Park Musical
The Straight Story (Lynch's only "normal" film, which makes it super weird)
American Pie
Dogma
Blair Witch Project
Cider House Rules
Sweet and Lowdown
And I know I'm leaving out some decent films.

Would put them all above American Beauty...which is Crash-light cloying.
October Sky doesn't get enough love as a great Saturday afternoon movie.
The more time goes by the more irritating American Beauty is, I'm glad they lampooned it in Not Another Teen Movie.

Up late as always, but after having finishing it as much of a PTA fanatic as I am there was too many subplots, it was like Crash. But the acting, filming, and blocking of the father death scene was literally one of the best things I've ever seen filmed. He ruined it by cutting away to frogs or what the hell ever but my original post about Tom Cruise sticks. His initial interaction with PSH, one of the best actors I've ever seen, was swallowed by Cruise, but the way they both conveyed the hell that was about to happen, and I won't ever say Cruise is Brando but the dying dad scene was incredible.
PTA's use of Phillip Seymour Hoffman in the background, barely out of frame, out of focus and in anguish was a better scene than I've seen in years. I haven't taken the time to google the oscar nominees for that year, but if not for an ensemble piece Cruise should have won an Oscar for that. I once read an acting teacher say that the only actor's she ever saw that could actually cry, were PSH and Cruise. Again not a perfect movie, but the original point was in his prime Tom Cruise was simply an underrated actor

I’d put Vinny in The color of Money up there.
