Okay start. My main takeaway was that it’s a huge love letter to the sci-fi pulps. Loved the red Martian woman (Dejah?), the War of the Worlds tripods, and the entire Princess of Mars conversation.

Hoping it gets past being a simple monster movie now that they’re at the mansion.

I enjoyed the episode. No expectations for the show though.

I enjoyed it. The segregation era mixed with Scifi horror was pretty well done in the pilot. I have no idea what to expect in the upcoming weeks. But it was pretty cool.

Fun tidbit. The alien at the beginning of the pilot episode is Jamie Chung. She was a cast member on Real World: San Diego back in the day.

As a southerner, I was happy to see that this wasn't a "look at how the deep south was" type of show. All of that crazy stuff was shown to take place in the far north.

when did the girl get hired by the uncle to go on the trip?

One minute she is talking to her sister and asking her for a place to stay and the very next morning she was going on the trip, when did she get involved with the uncle?

Off camera. She'd mentioned she was looking for work and didn't have a place to stay. Going on the trip seemed like a sensible solution.

Thought it was very good for the most part.

But I did think the whole all white people are evil racists/murderers was a bit heavy handed.

I get that it’s the 1950s and things like that really happened but they took it to the extreme and it took a little away from the primary story.

Yeah that happened off camera. I think the plan was to bring her to her brothers house, the house where they spent the night (they said she was only going part way). After her fight with her brother she left with them to keep going.

That's pretty much what a Green Book guide was for during that time period. To point out what towns, restaurants, and counties you needed to stay away from. If anything, this pilot episode pointed out that it wasn't just a southern thing. The north wasn't some progressive ideal place.

I get that and understand that was how things were for black Americans at that time.

But damn, literally every white person they met from the first scene on was cartoon character level racist.

I think it's a mix of the current times, plus the sci-fi element allows them to exaggerate everything, and the uncle's mission puts him in the direct line of fire.

The restaurant scene followed by them being chased out of town was a result of the Uncle standing his ground. I don't know if that was standard operating procedure for him, seeing how far he could push white people in certain establishments and towns (to note for his guide). But if he's driving around testing limits, he's going to run into the worst of white people.

During the 25 MPH sunset chase, I started to think it was satire.

Also, can't believe the weird girl from Hangin' with Mr. Cooper turned into a dime. I know whose sister she is, and I don't want to hear it.

In his previous travel they shattered both of his kneecaps. That's why he refused to allow Hippolyta to go on her own.

Yeah i get that racism is an important them in the book, and the time period. But it was cartoonish levels of bad. I mean i was more apt to believe the monsters were real than the ridiculous racists. I mean literally every white person is trying to kill them and the sheriff and deputies would rather be racists than defend themselves. They should tone that done to a more subtle level with the occasional foaming mouth killer.

But i went in wanting to hate it and came away liking it and just laughed at the over done racism.

Me too.

Watched tonight’s episode just now. I feel like this is an anthology series where each episode is a different story. Not really sure what just happened.
