Well acted little thriller.
I’m not one to gush over 80s nostalgia but this really did it. I almost got terminator vibes with the workout scenes. It’s a very sweaty sweaty movie
I am not familiar with steroids but I found the steroid stuff… a little odd. And what happens at the end is a little too metaphorical.
Still, also lots of good themes about broken relationships that works on multiple levels.

I thought it was pretty damn good. Stewart and Harris were fantastic. The final confrontation was pretty stupid, but it didn't take away from the rest of the film.

Yeah… didn’t love that final confrontation.
And again, I don’t know the side effects of steroids other than roid rage. Don’t think that fully worked
Stewart was hilarious with her… in eloquent line delivery. “Yep”. Both women were great

It’s one of my top movies of the year. Great plot and performances. A lot of people on this board shite on it when it first came out just because of the lesbian thing. It does get really weird at the end typical A24 style, thought

What a statement. I suppose you’re correct. It’s just the whiplash many feel by the astounding pace of the changes in society.
Lots of folks aren’t so sure these changes are fully undergirded by reality, and so aren’t so willing to accept stories that take it for granted.

My mother returned to the US in the 70s (she had left when she was 7) for college. In college, her best friends were gay guys for the most part. She felt safer around them than straight men.
We didn’t even really know what gay was growing up other than boys who liked boys but she would tell us PG stories of the gay community in Florida in the 70s.
I think this has always been a thing. Either people just didn’t notice or were generally polite enough to mind their own fricking business.
The past wasn’t nearly as black and white as we want to believe it.

Yes, there’s always been gay people (or same-sex attracted people). Yes, there’s always been groups of people who challenged the norms (and/or natural tendencies).
But there are some unprecedented cultural changes that have occurred in the past couple of centuries, decades, and years, that leave people unnerved and without a center.
1) The birth control pill was/is so revolutionary that it effectively makes us cyborgs. The normal processes that affect evolution are now stood on their ear. We are struggling with that reality now.
2) A subset to the effect of the pill is that it allowed for the sexual revolution. Sex that is separated from procreation, with all of the biological realities and the sophisticated cultural and psychological norms that went with it are now up for discussion and debate (1970’s) and beyond that is serious confusion, where we are now.
3) The Obergefell decision which mandated that same sex marriage is protected as a right. This continued the questioning of what is a marriage for? What is a family? Why get married? Then to “what are romantic relationships for”? Why not just have sex with strangers, or with friends, or with computer simulations, or with relatives, or with groups, or with children?
In the land where any feelings of friendship can get blurred into sexual gratification, and there are no boundaries or rules, a movie is made that makes the assumption it’s normative is asking a lot of it’s audience.
