Will Smith was great, but the movie overall was boring. I was ready for them to start wrapping it up an hour and 45 minutes in, and I saw that there were still 40 minutes left. I honestly would’ve much rathered a movie about John Bernthal‘s character

I agree it drug at some spots. I figured the big match they showed a bunch of had to be the climax, even if it was very very early in Venus’ career and there’s a lot after that.

I enjoyed it as a whole. I do like that they didn’t make Richard an entirely sympathetic and altruistic character and showed how overbearing he was a lot of the time. Some of the race issues he highlighted were legitimate, but they also show that a lot of people helped them along the way. Definitely an Oscar nomination worthy performance from Smith, at the least.

I usually skip Oscar bait movies but I thought this one had a legit positive message without beating you over the head.

I married into a Tennis family, so I knew a bit of their story from an outsider point of view. My wife and in-laws were fairly impressed with how on the nose they were in some areas.

I will never understand people who post in threads of something they aren't interested in just to say they aren't interested.

It's weird.

So are people that want to live in echo chambers.

It's not about living in an echo chamber. If you have not watched the film, then how can you offer any type of criticism one way or the other?

In this case, people commenting in the thread about how the movie isn't any good even though they haven't watched it, or commenting on how they know it will be horrible because reasons, is a pointless exercise.

Are they allowed to, sure, but again what is the point?

People are commenting on Will Smith's acting and whether they like him. People comment all the time in this forum on films that they have yet to see...and there's nothing wrong with that.

Look at the Cowboy Bebop thread. 2/3 of the posts are from before it was even released(not "dropped") on Netflix.

It’s fine if you want to criticize the idea of a film before it comes out for casting or creative decisions. Once the movie comes out, though, you look kind of stupid criticizing it when you haven’t seen it.

I agree with this.

But I am on record being very critical (and correct) about WoT and it’s showrunners’ stupidity beforehand. I knew I’d watch that regardless because I’m a fantasy incel nerd.

Every person that said anything positive about the movie has gotten more downvotes than upvotes but not a single person has said they watched it and didn't like it.

We watched it this afternoon and I thought it was very good, the acting was great.

You know why.

On this board you know damn well people down voting assume this movie is just some kind of BLM love fest anti white boy movie without ever actually seeing the film.

I thought it was good
He really did have their best interests at heart and he was protecting them unlike what capriati went thru
Plus he got them out of hood
They did throw Shreveport under the bus

Agree with a lot of this, the movie did a good job reflecting the reality they grew up in and their journey.. even saw some clips of how Richard acted in that interview where he pulls Venus and bitches at the reporter and it was damn near word for word in the movie.

I also agree that while he wasn’t perfect, especially to his other kids. I thought the movie had a great message of supporting your kids, pushing them to achieve their dreams, but also protecting them and letting them be kids.

I rarely recommend movies to people, but I specifically called a friend of mine who has a daughter who’s 17, really pretty, smart and a great singer.. and she’s gotten a ton of offers to do things since she was a kid that could blow her up in the entertainment world, but he’s basically said she’s not doing anything until after high school, and she can develop her talents locally…. So was interesting to see Richard have a similar mindset

I am sure it's a good movie with good acting, but man I have just zero interest.

I'm thankful that everyone doesn't share that valid "I won't watch that" opinion. The threads would be jammed with these attention seeking posts.

isn't all posts attention seeking?

The girls who play Venus and Serena steal the movie. They were extraordinary.

Great movie and I think this is his year to win the oscar.

Also, there is fine line between parental abuse and pushing your kids to extremes :)

Clearly you've never heard Richard Williams speak. This wasn't Will Smith just creating an affectation for the fun of it.
