Well he was fricking drunk half the time writing all his early stuff.
In his memoir he admitted that from Carrie to 1990 he'd write most of his chapters late at night and go through about 15 tall boys and pass out at 8am.
People still think though that the Shining is his best prose. It seemed he grew from Carrie and was still feeling that literature class mist hovering over him but more refined.

Kubrick did not frick around behind the camera. He didn't make a ton of movies, but every frame of every one was art.

The Shining sucks balls. Kubrick's attempt to make art kept him from making a good movie. Real slap in the face to a great novel.
Fwiw--only pussies admit to being scared by his version of The Shining. Bring on the hate Idk.
