The few scenes I liked was when the wife flipped out and Abe put her in her place. Also liked when JGL told off his dad about being afraid of his mom and he slapped him.

I thought the actual politicking and maneuvering to get the votes were the best part of the movie, as well as all the scenes on the floor of the Senate.
I thought all of the Lincoln family stuff was wasted crap, and the ending was weak. The movie is about the 13th Amendment and its passage, going through the assassination off screen was silly. The movie shouldn't have even touched on it. End it at passage, or Appomattox or something The last 25-30 minutes were superfluous.

I thought it was interesting in some parts, but for a movie about Lincoln, to not even show the assassination was BS
The movie literally should have been called the 13th amendment, then another movie actually about lincolns life made

I can't believe they actually showed that many people casting their votes. They could have edited that scene better.

So I thought the movie should've been called "Abolition" rather than "Lincoln" as Lincoln implies it's a biography. But a friend made a good point after the movie: Lincoln's whole life was building up to that moment, from the time he saw the slaves in New Orleans until the ratification of the bill. I think that's a valid point. Obviously, Lincoln even believed abolition was bigger than the Civil War. So I'm ok with that.
***SPOILERS BELOW***
My big issue was the ending. Did anyone else feel like the scene with his servant watching him walk down the hall would've been the perfect ending and Spielberg ignored it to get artsy at the end? He was on his way to Ford's Theater which everyone watching the movie was aware of without it being stated. I think stopping the movie there would've shown that Lincoln's everlasting legacy was abolition and it was much larger than the beginning and end of one man's life.
But instead we see Tad's reaction to the assassination, rather than the actual assassination, then Lincoln's proclaimed dead, then a flashback in a movie heavily structured on chronology.
The entire movie pretty much avoids Lincoln's life, and is entirely focused on the thirteenth amendment, then at the end, why is it so important to show his death?
Other than the ending, I loved the movie. Fantastic acting, story, and setting throughout. And as someone said earlier, the politicking in the movie to get the votes necessary to pass the amendment was very entertaining, as well as all of the humor from Lincoln and Stevens.

I caught the same flub in it twice. The first one was when Abe told anothe guy to "call" somebody. It happened a second time but no sure when cause I forgot. Checked it out and the telephone wasn't invented until 1870 so how are they making these "calls"?

lol. The definition of "call" isn't limited to using a phone to speak to someone. It just means "go get them" or "go speak with." For example phrases like "gentleman caller" or "he called for a meeting."
On topic, I thought the movie was very good, but I knew it was a movie about the 13th amendment passage. And considering it was a movie about the passing of legislation it was fantastic!

I saw Lincoln with my parents on a Monday night in December. My parents and I enjoyed the movie. I burned the movie to a dvd and gave it to my grandfather for Christmas. I have the movie downloaded on my computer.

Said that to my wife as we were leaving the theater. It was the absolute perfect ending...I don't know how Spielberg fricked that up.

I guess I travel in different circles than many posters. I really liked the movie and have yet to talk with anyone who didn't think it was a fine film. Not on my top 10 list, but no question DDL's performance was Oscar-caliber...probably his best performance IMO.

I'm really not one to criticize a movie after I see it for the first time or notice things I really didn't like. If it entertains me, it was good. If it doesn't entertain me, it wasn't.
But as soon as Lincoln ended and the credits came up, I leaned over to my friends and said, "I absolutely hated that ending."
