'Johnny Carson: King of Late Night' takes an in-depth look: 5/14

This looks to be a treat.
A PBS 'American Masters' documentary investigates the mystique of the elusive 'Tonight Show' host, 20 years after he left TV.
Barbara Walters, Peter Jennings and Diane Sawyer all made their best pitch but were turned down. Johnny Carson, the man who changed forever the world of late-night talk, wasn't talking.
The network news powerhouses had separately attempted to secure interviews with Carson to get him to speak about his life and his place as one of the most influential figures in TV history. But from his 1992 retirement after 30 years on"The Tonight Show"until his death in 2005 at age 79, Carson steadfastly refused to cooperate with almost all interviews.

Carson will always be the King. It's a shame he kind of got run out before he was really ready.
If you think about it, Leno has basically caused Carson and Conan to leave NBC.

I was going to post this. I already have my DVR set.
There will never be another like him. Ever.
I really wish he would have given one long interview before he died.

You're out of your effing mind if you think that happened.

I heard that Carson wanted to leave.

Carson's ratings were beginning to fall a bit and the Tonight Show was showing it's age. Leno had offers to go to other networks and his agent used that leverage to get NBC to expedite Johnny's retirement. I thought everyone knew that.

Carson could have stayed as long as he wanted. It was his choice and his alone to leave. If he wasn't ready, he would have stayed in the limelight.

Leno forced him out and stole the seat from Johnny's preferred successor, letterman. Then Leno forced Conan out under the same type of game plan. Neither letterman nor Conan, nor did Johnny, think much of Leno after he did what he did. Johnny would funnel jokes to letterman after he went to CBS. Again, Leno is an opportunistic über douche.

Does that say when this will air?

This is nuts. Carson left on his own. If he were pushed, he would have gone to another network. The battle was over who would replace him, Leno or Letterman, but no one could have pushed him out. Only God could have taken him out.

Unfortunately, my search abilities are limited at work. If you just google "Johnny Carson pushed out". You can see all kinds of stories about it.
There was a book turned into a movie about the whole fiasco back in 1995. It is pretty much widely known that Leno's manager spread rumors about Leno jumping to another network to get his own show. Johnny got wind of this somehow and just decided ot go ahead and call it. Yes, he did go out on his own terms but so did Nixon by that definition.

Thanks for this...just set the DVR.
No shite, and it's absolutely amazing that he never did. Talk about someone who was really dedicated to stepping completely out of the limelight.
It's so fascinating that someone so famous and beloved simply never felt the need to do anything publicly for his fans and simply wanted his work to do his talking.
I'm looking forward to this..

Watching this show reminds me why he was just so much better than Leno/Letterman. He was the King.
