It's not as bad as MTVs 100 straight hours of Ridiculousness, but CMT (another Viacom entity) is not much better now. It seems they've just become Nick at Night with a slice of 3 hours of music vidoes at 4 am, and virtually zero original programming anymore.

Just a couple of years ago, CMT actually tried to come up with original content. Now, it seems they don't even try anymore.

Not that long ago, they actually had some decent mindless TV. They had a couple shows hosted by Stone Cold, Redneck Island, and two versions of Party Down South. These shows were popular enough that they now have Pluto TV channels fully dedicated to those old shows.

But over the last few years, it seems like they've killed all of those shows. It's not even like they were expensive to make.

This seems like a huge trend by Viacom lately.

Almost all the cable channels are like this now. They take a handful of shows and repeat them endlessly. For example, USA Network (not owned by Viacom), just shows repeats of NCIS and Law & Order most of the time.

Yet, all of these networks are now pushing for MORE CHANNELS via streaming networks. They obviously don't have the budget nor inclination to even fill the channels they have now with new, original content....so what the hell are they going to put on the new channels? More repeats of 90s and 00s bad sitcoms? More airings of Tombstone, Shawshank, and Fast and Furious movies?

I can get that stuff for free on Pluto and Xumo.

Even if they didn't produce music videos, theoretically, they could still produce country music related content.

Now, original scripted programming is a no-go, because those shows are too expensive for most TV execs to stomach. But why did CMT drift away from airing the Grand Ole Opry?

I don't get why some networks choose to air huge blocks of really shitty sitcoms, Reba was an awful show

TBS for some reason has decided to air large blocks of the George fricking Lopez show in the morning...in place of Seinfeld. WTF

George Lopez is probably costs a fraction of what it costs to air and syndicate Seinfeld. I'm sure that the more episodes air, the more the network has to pay in residuals.

Airing 2 hours of Seinfeld every day for 10 years probably ain't cheap.

It feels like all of these cable channels are just trying to milk out every penny now instead of past IP instead of creating their own now.

Netflix and Amazon are killing these channels and probably sucking up much of the writing/production talent that used to go to places like TBS/TNT etc.

The King of Queens is on CMT too?

Most of those shows are already re-running on TV Land, why is it they need to run on another channel?

This is just what the death of cable looks like. All the fluffer channels are just IP dumps that can still sell a few commercials. Probably won't be too long before it's all just on demand streaming and no daily schedules outside of sports channels.
