Both movies are legitimate all time greats in their respective genres. I love both of them for different reasons but if gauged on watchability and enjoyment, Aliens does it for me.

For me, it is my favorite movie ever.

Alien - a science fiction thriller. The arrival and discovery of the wrecked spaceship and the alien "eggs" was truly "other worldly" and creepy. The events that followed on their ship were truly scary with a sense of helpless dread.

Aliens - essentially an action movie. I knew I wasn't going to like it as much as Alien as soon as the marines started slapping high fives and making wisecracks. And I was right. I enjoyed it enough, but it was no where near the first one as far as my tastes are concerned (and, as I've pointed out before, those tastes are impeccable).

Alien 3 - an underrated and under-appreciated film in my opinion. I can understand why a lot of people didn't like it, but it was pretty interesting in a very dark sort of way.

And, of course, the fourth one just didn't work at all.

I don't think I can ever recall reading or hearing about any beef between fans of the Alien series.

There are those who like Alien the best, Aliens the best, or even Alien 3 the best. Unlike most other series though, I find that most fans at least understand why people enjoy all three.

I'm a huge fan of Alien, and I'm not as big on Aliens (though I do think Aliens3 is sorely underrated), and I'm with you. I've never heard of this conflict. Thank you, internet.

With Alien 3 being mentioned, is any body upset that we didn't get the Xenomorphs on Earth as they promised Alien 3 would deliver?

Good to see Alien 3 getting a little bit of love. It's a pretty solid movie that's similar to the first one. The ratings make it sound like a horrible film but it's nothing like that at all.

Alien3 bombed because it is the most relentlessly depressing action movie ever made. It offers no hope, and then lives up to that promise. Oh, and it's an AIDS parable. Can't imagine how it failed at the box office. It's a movie that almost openly taunts the audience in not giving them what they want.

Though the scene in the tunnels is my favorite in all three films. Just incredibly tense and so well-filmed.

Here is a good thread on the Prometheus board discussing the Alien vs. Aliens disconnect.

Round 1

Another one

Can't wait for Promethius to come out... Prequel to alien, will have no xenomorphs, perhaps sets up for the alien ship where the first face eater was.

Meh. There are multiple assumptions that are made in that argument.

1. If we are only dealing with Alien and Aliens, that guy assumes that the name Xenomorph implies that the alien takes DNA from the host and implements it into its own genome. The name Xenomorph was given to the creature. There is absolutely nothing that supports the claim that it assumes characteristics of the organism it infects, until you get to the 3rd movie.

2. The idea that the Queen is something that is contradictory to the alien in the first film is also false. Despite the fact that there is nothing that supports the appearance of a queen, it makes complete biologic sense that there is one. In many species, male to female transformation does occur when reproduction is needed.

The concept of a single alien mutating into a queen in order to reproduce is not some crazy idea. It makes complete sense. Insects are known to do it. Some species of frogs are also known to do it.

The xenomorph in the first film could easily have become a queen. The timespan of the first film and its own need to survive rather than reproduce is what kept it from happening.

And apparently I was wrong about there being no beef between Alien and Aliens fans.
