This gets into the discussion I've always wanted to get in to around here: What makes a "great" movie, great? What are the qualities? If it is in fact, only audience support that makes a film great, then you may have an argument for something like Pulp Fiction. But that is a discussion for another day.

I would say the same exact thing about Shawshank. But like I mention, it's really another discussion which may or may not be fit for this thread.

You're right Shawshank has a tight plot, solid direction, great music (I would disagree on the acting, which is across the board mediocre, but that's not really a big deal). Lots of people loving SR doesn't make it overrated, BUT if lots of people loving it turns the movie into one of the "best" ever then you have a problem.

Admittedly, that's a discussion about defining "best," which is maybe for another time.
