Herod vs Cort, without Cort’s right hand being injured or the bombs being rigged to go off?

Cort easily.

Herod knew he would lose, that's why he told his man to kill Cort no matter what happens. Herod wasn't afraid to die, he just wanted to fight and kill the best fighters. He was an evil, cold hearted killer with skill, but Cort was a damn cheat code.

Think someone on here said Cort is probably the best gunfighter ever put on film and he's probably right. Don't think he missed a shot the entire movie.

When you watch the draw of Herod vs the hired gunfighter, it’s like an instant draw and shoot in one motion. Seems like there’s no way someone could draw and shoot him before he also shoots. I feel like you’d have a scenario like Herod vs the kid where both guys actually fire.

I'm giving it to Cort just because of age. We all slow down, and when a split second matter...it matters.

Goddamn I love that movie.

Gonna rewatch today.

Underrated movie. Only movie DiCaprio doesn't overreact like Shatner

“How bout that left hand Ace?”. Herod was such a great character. He knew or strongly suspected that Cort that was the best though. That’s part of what made him a great character. For as big of a piece of shite as he was, he called things like he saw them and he was always down for the action. Most movie villains are written as the archetypal insecure coward.

Completely agree. Fantastic movie villain

To answer the OP’s question: Cort. Herod knew Cort was faster than him. It’s why he made him compete. It’s like he saw so much of himself inside Cort and then Cort proved him wrong and left the life when Herod probably saw him as his successor. That was basically Herod’s whole purpose during the movie, to prove to Cort that he’s just like Herod (not just fast, but ruthless, a cold blooded killer) and if Cort shot and killed him, he was proving Herod’s point. Herod even admits he’s scared of Cort (and wasn’t really scared of anyone up until that point.) and it says something that Herod told his men to gun down Cort even if he loses (at that point, Cort had a broken hand.) so even with his opponent having a broken hand, Herod wasn’t convinced he could win that’s how badass Cort is.

There was a clear tier above The Kid and The Lady. Both of them really good and fast. But Cort and Herod were in that tier above.

Have to go with Cort
If Herod was better, he would have known, and never would have floated the idea of losing the fight.

Fun fact: Herod is Brad Wesley’s grandfather.
