I'm so mad at myself for not seeing this until I was a senior in high school. Its such a great movie, and it would have made trying to understand The Heart of Darkness for summer reading before my Freshman year so much easier.
Wow, I didn't have to read it until advanced English my Sophomore year and we watched Apocalypse Now in class.

It's worthwhile if you're a serious fan of the movie or the moviemaking process. Has some great tidbits like Sheen being drunk off his arse for the mirror scene.

I saw this for the first time a few years ago. Definitely a strange movie.

I think overall it is pretty damning RE: the intellectual value of the film

How exactly? Because the actors were zoned out of their minds and ad-libbing?
Btw, this is still almost as great as the first time I watched on a worn out VHS tape: Apocalypse Pooh

I never could get into this movie. It has it's moments, but generally speaking, I don't get all the hype around it.

because of coppola's comments at the time (regarding the meaning of the book and the meaning of the film being of questionable value)

Somehow despite my military navy/marine tours I still have never seen this movie. Should I watch the original version first?

OK, been a while since I've watched the doc.

I would watch the original theatrical release first and if you really like it watch Redux later.
My high school English teacher who had us watch it after reading Heart of Darkness was a Vietnam vet who found parts of it relatable to his own horrific experience.

That's a pretty good deal for all three.

I would. I think most of the people who don't get the movie or just outright dislike it have never seen the original version. Nothing added to the Redux version is essential to the movie. IMHO the redux is a "harder' watch.

I actually saw Redux first when I was 14 or 15, and still loved the movie, but I still prefer the original version and would recommend that to someone watching for the first time.
