Alien To The Third Power is okay. If you watch it in the right mindset, it’s the only way Ripley’s story could end. Her life has always sucked. Why shouldn’t her death be equally as bleak?

Plus, if you were a kid, 1992 was the year Kenner finally decided to release an ALIENS (1986) toyline, which was kickass if you were a kid then.

It wasn’t what I expected it to be but it’s okay as a stand-alone. The scene in the shower and the vents are pretty frickin creepy. And the liquid metal alien is also a cool sequence

This movie nearly made him quit directing movies forever

Massive studio interference during a troubled production that was so bad that he’s still sore about it decades later

I'm pretty sure it was his first studio film, too. Prior to that he had only done shorts, commercials, and music videos.

I think I remember reading that his least favorite film of his is The Game.

Yeah, I second The Game as being his weakest.

It’s also okay, but it’s not as clever as the movie thinks it is. Fincher himself says the third act sucks.

In fairness, it was his first feature length film. Before that he had been making music videos. He was a young, up and coming director whom the studio pressured and bullied because he had absolutely zero clout. James Cameron started out his career in similar circumstances as his first feature length film was Piranha II: The Spawning. Fincher followed up Alien 3 with Se7en and James Cameron followed up Piranha II with The Terminator.

The game is awesome. Not quite his top level stuff but it’s better than Benjamin Button

Alien 3, Benjamin button, and Panic room (admittedly I haven’t seen this in a long long time) are my bottom 3 for him.

Insanity.

As for Alien 3, yeah it's mostly a failure. I do think there are some inspired ideas: the prison planet conceived as a monastery, taking a massive swinging by instantly eradicating the makeshift "family" formed in Aliens, it's hilariously dark.

By my count on Wikipedia, there were 9 separate writers who wrote either a treatment, a draft, or punched up the script.

They began shooting before the final draft was complete.

Fired the original director right before filming to force in a big budget style direction without the big budget to fund it.

The producers insisted on making it completely unlike Alien and Aliens, while Fox told everyone they had to make it just like the first two.

Just a huge clusterfrick. Should have waited for Ridley Scott's schedule to open up and cement a screenplay.

Alien 3 did spawn the SuperNintendo game, which was easily one of the best titles in the SNES library.

Alien 3 is arguably the second best movie in the Alien franchise. It is brutally underrated, and I’ve argued that on this board for more than a decade. It’s fantastic.

And I never knew anybody hated The Game. That movie is awesome.

I agree. Everything considered, it's amazing they had a coherent movie to release.

I think if the second movie was more like Alien than an action movie, 3 is more appreciated.

The criticisms of The Game are valid. The third act is a mess.

Awful take. The first 2 chapters (in a different way, of course) were revolutionary films.

While I don't hate Alien 3 as much as most, it simply does not hold up "arguably" or otherwise with the first 2. The film did some good things. Alex Thomson's cinematography (Thomson largely underrated, probably because he was a late bloomer) was outstanding. The visual effects and sets were outstanding.

The supporting cast, Dutton, Dance, Glover and McGann in particular, did a great job with what they had. Weaver didn't seem up to the challenge for this film, IMHO.

The story and pacing killed the movie. In no reasonable reality is it "arguably" better than Alien or Aliens. Period. Full stop.

Good. This makes sense, because Fincher is too damn smart for this pile of rubbish. Glad to see he acknowledges it.

The Game is one of those movies you can't really think about, which means it's great fodder for internet discussions.

As was stated earlier, Fincher even admits the last 1/3 is a mess
