I love Six Feet Under, but are pretty much all of the characters assholes?

I'm just about finished bingeing this show. I really enjoyed it but it seems like the further it goes on the less redeeming features any of the characters exhibit.
Nate - is pretty much just a selfish jerk.
Ruth - Totally self absorbed and self involved.
Claire - Doesn't seem to see consider anything outside of herself as having any value. Actually, doesn't really see any value in herself either.
David - Might be the closest to a non a-hole but his neurotic passive behavior makes him come across as one a lot of time.
Brenda- Ultra damaged and way whoreish a lot of the time.
Rico - Not a bad guy but just tends to give into his baser instincts a lot of time.
And that's not even getting into the supporting characters and guest characters.

Every single one of the main characters are miserable fricks. David and Rico are the least unbearable. Brenda is so eye-rollingly terrible that I can't even stand that actress in anything else.
That being said, I loved SFU.

Yeah. I love it too. But I agree the characters are miserable SOBs. For some reason Nate comes off as the worst to me. But Ruth is not far behind. Brenda I always just thought of as crazy.

Ghost dad seemed pretty cool.
Come back after you finish it so I can say the rest of my comment without ruining anything.

Pretty much all the main characters. Bettina was cool though.

I agree with you but at the same time they all had their reasons for being assholes.
Nate- was living his own life until his dad died and he was forced to get involved with a family business that he had no interest in
Ruth- was a stay at home wife and mother with no real life outside of her family. After her husband died she was "free" for the first time in her life.
Claire- typical teenager
David- gay and closeted, in the beginning. Kind of left dealing with the business by himself after the dad died because Nate was useless.
Brenda- had a fricked up childhood, a crazy brother and parents who are self absorbed and don't really give two shits about their kids
Rico- married right out of high school and had kids. Does his best to support his family but resents the fact that he didn't get to sow his oats.

I wonder if they were really assholes or if they were just portrayed as real people with real problems and their issues were intimately examined.
It's been a little while since I have watched the series, so the details are a little fuzzy for me.
