Usually as a general rule of thumb, I try to give a show that's been highly recommended by others a full season before I stop watching. Especially dramas that tend to have a slow build.

I just finished Season 1 and I was hooked about midway through. At the very least, give it a couple of episodes with Omar around before you call it quits. Probably one of my favorite TV characters right now. It's definitely better on the back half of the season as things start to come to fruition.

If after watching the first season you're not into it, then I say drop it. Sometimes it's just different strokes for different folks.

Omar's character is worth watching until the end of season 5.

Entertainment awards are typically political and bullshite...

The Wire is one of the most important shows ever made on ANY MEDIUM. Are you really comparing "The Shield" to "The Wire"?

Agree to disagree...I hope you stick with the Wire because it really is a great show in my opinion.

Omar and Bunk got me hooked

McNutty, Dee, Avon were boring to me.

Keep watching the show. I watched it with my brother and he bowed out after episode 6, but then when he saw me watching the season finale, he went back and caught up.

I did during the first part of the show say "still don't get why so many people loved this show"

I will now say that I liked the show, but my expectations for it were higher because of the hype. I didn't find it to be the GOAT...top 30 or so..yeah.....so regardless, worth the watch

PS: I'm more sci-fi...this was "too real"....uninventive as far as introducing me to a new concept.

Keep watching. You are about to the place where you will get hooked.

For me, it was the Griggs playing the undercover scene.

Right now, where you are, Omar has barely gotte going and first season is in my opinion the worst of the 5, save 5.

Why does it get so much love?

Because it's as accurate as it gets and it's more than a cops vs. drug dealer show. If you ever work for a system where you work under tier of people who work under a tier and so on...you will see that it's brilliant social commentary. I sort of look at it as the epitome of people doing what they have to do to go up the chain of command latter -- be it the police dept, city hall, the drug game, or even newspaper reporters and dock workers.

Not to worry, it will come full circle.

I do know that slow/stupid people don't get it. I loaned mine out to a friend who had the attention span of a goldfish and all he could get into were Avon annd Stringer. He's watch and text. For example, he had no idea what Clay Davis did to Bell. He couldn't catch on to why season 2 might have been the most important yet (maybe not the most entertaining).

I had to watch it a 2nd time because I missed so much.

Yes, and I have a comment about that that isn't a spoiler as much as its the exact opposite of a spoiler because it concerns something that the show doesn't do.

sounds like you're describing Mad Men...another show that gets the periodic..."I'm three episodes in, when does it get good?"

Honestly, sometimes I think people expect everything to be Battlestar Gallactica or Lost and have lost the capacity to understand subtlety.

ETA: And The Shield is the "King of Queens" version of The Wire. So if you think Mall Cop was great cinema, you will probably love The Shield over The Wire.

This is a ridiculous thing to say. They are both really good shows, but very different. Some people can enjoy them both, and some people gravitate towards one or the other. It often has nothing to do with their intellect, but rather why kind of entertainment they prefer.

What bugs me is when someone says they like The Shield, and someone immediately interrupts them and says "if you liked The Shield, you will love The Wire. It's so much better." While that may or may not be true, it causes a lot of people to start watching The Wire expecting it to be something totally different than it is, hence the let down.
