I think he did love his son. I don't think he was a sociopath. Just overwhelming filled with greed and bitterness.

That's me too. I'm certainly not saying it sucks or it's awful or I hated it..it just wasn't really my cup of tea. Some people lavish it with praise and think it's one of the best movies in a while and it's their favorite movie ever and on and on..and that's perfectly fine. I just didn't care for it.

Agree with all this. I've always wanted to go back and watch it again b/c I must be missing something but I just can't bring myself to sit through it again.

His character very much resembles a person I know.
Dedicated his whole life to making a fortune (coincidentally, in the natural gas business). Now his life just consists of blowing through his great wealth and rubbing his success in all his old enemies' faces. He too is a drunk, and he generally hates everyone; he thinks they're all so stupid.
