In a list of traditional family sitcoms, the list should really just be Cosby, Family Ties and Growing Pains and yes, Married With Children.
Everything else relied on gimmicks. Male nannies, dorky neighbors/family, aliens, different child guardian scenarios.
That's why I believe Modern Family is one of the best sitcoms of the modern era. Even though its not exactly traditional, its as close to it as you can expect in our time. They don't take themselves as serious with after school messages like family shows in the 80's did either, but they still manage to deal with complex situations parents do today.

Well if you're gonna make those in your list U have to include Roseanne.
Roseanne really was kind of the anti Cosby show but there was still a message every week. Roseanne was the bridge from a show like Cosby to married with children.

I say this as a huge fan of Modern Family but there is definitely a message most weeks. Usually delivered as a cutaway interview at the end and is usually given by Jay.
So we come full circle back to Ed O'Neil. Lol.

Agreed.
Roseanne was a really good show that I used to love watching. And I could relate to it a good bit sometimes. It's cool that I could watch a lower middle class white family and their struggles and get entertainment/lessons out of that just like I could out of a show about a black family in NY with doctor and lawyer parents.

I meant to edit about Jay's message and the matter of using a mockumentry style, which I could take or leave.
Jay's message doesn't come across as after school special though, right? It's not so in your face.
And you're right about Roseanne. I just never liked that show.

Family Ties was my favorite. Cosby show was just ok for me. Full House was a good show for children under like 8 but that's about it. And yeah if those are the shows your going to pick you might as well make this a 80s/90s thread.

I know Roseanne came about in 1988, but I personally put it in the 90s category. Guess that's when I watched them for the most part.

Pretty good ranking but there is a MUCH larger separation from Family Ties to Growing Pains.
