In terms of quality films that came out? I think 2012, 2014, and 2019 were exceptional years of cinema.

2010 was easily the best year of the decade for cinema. The list of quality films that year is staggering.

The Social Network
Shutter Island
Toy Story 3
Inception
Black Swan
The King's Speech
Blue Valentine
127 Hours
True Grit
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Incendies
Winter Bone

Just an absolutely stacked year for movies.

American Sniper

2016 - One of my favorite years of film ever. ARRIVAL, the peak of the Golden Age of horror, LA LA LAND, HELL OR HIGH WATER, NICE GUYS, EDGE OF SEVENTEEN... whatever kind of movie you liked, there was a great one fr you

2010 - The standard top choice. It was great at the top, though I think it had a squishy middle. But INCEPTION/BLACK SWAN/SOCIAL NETWORK is an absurd top 3

2014 - Great for sci fi/horror. EX MACHINA, EDGE OF TOMORROW, IT FOLLOWS, and JOHN WICK. WHIPLASH is a masterpiece as is FORCE MAJEURE. If nothing else, I admire BOYHOOD's ambition. And hell, WILD was my favorite movie of the year.

2017 - The year of the underrated film. BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99 and DEATH OF STALIN are already cult classics, SHAPE OF WATER was one of the most legit bizarre Best Picture winners ever ad of course people ignored the central message of how anger rots you n 3 BILLBOARDS. THE FLORIDA PROJECT is a quiet masterpiece while THOR RAGNAROK is quietly the best MCU film. Even LOGAN LUCKY somehow got ignored.

2013 - Some great over the top movies (12 YEARS SLAVE, AMERICAN HUSTLE, WOLF OF WALL STREET) and more quiet great ones (INSIDE LEWYN DAVIS, FRUITVALE STATION). the same year that gave us UNDER THE SKIN and FROZEN. A really weird year.

2018 - ANNIHLATION, HEREDITARY and SPIDER-VERSE. The subtle horror of EIGHTH GRADE and the sly comedy of THE FAVOURITE. And Spike Lee's best movie in years in an informal debate with Boots Riley.

2012 - LOOPER and AVENGERS headline the year. I'm a fan of LINCOLN even if no one else is. It's not a bad year, but it didn't have much which spoke to me.

2015 - MAD MAX FURY ROAD is the greatest movie of the decade. then some other stuff came out. THE BIG SHORT sums the year up. It's not bad, it's just there.

2011 - I love A SEPARATION. CABIN IN THE WOODS is a good deconstructionist horror film. After that? Is GOON the next best movie that year? Seriously. Maybe WINTER SOLDIER. A dismal year, which made 2010 look even better.

2019 - We're still sorting through it, so I'm reserving judgment. PARASITE is great as THE FAREWELL. I don'y hate the nominees this year of the ones I've seen, but they don't speak to me either. Th blockbusters sort of fizzled, too. I'm pinning my hopes on JOJO RABBIT and 1917.

I was about to put it on my 2014 list as well, but it was actually released in April 2015 in the US. And it was nominated in the 2016 oscars

It's listed as 2014 film on wikipedia and imdb. That's the most research on release dates I'm willing to do.

It would not.

two thousand eighteen
two thousand eleven
two thousand fifteen
two thousand fourteen
two thousand nineteen
two thousand seventeen
two thousand sixteen
two thousand ten
two thousand thirteen
two thousand twelve

Alphanumerically is easier:
2010
2011
2012
2013
2014
2015
2016
2017
2018
2019

First of all, that was a good, thoughtful post. But your comments about 2012? Way different than mine. There were TONS of good movies that year. I think 2012 would probably be my favorite year, from memory at least.

Zero Dark Thirty is one of the best movies of the decade IMO, definitely my favorite of that year. Argo, Silver Linings Playbook, End of Watch [great IMO], The Master [not my personal favorite, but highly regarded], Beasts of the Southern Wild, Moonrise Kingdom, Skyfall, Django Unchained [overrated, but liked by many], Lawless, Flight, Dark Knight Rises, Life of Pi, Prometheus, Cloud Atlas, Killing Them Softly, Amour.

And that's just from a Google search, picking out the ones I've seen.

Also. Sorry, but that movie is FAR from great. I even watched it twice to try to change my mind - nope, it's trash. I don't care who directed.

Yeah, we just have different tastes. From that list I like Silver Linings quite a bit and I think Cloud Atlas is an interesting failure. And I'll save a spot for Django, which I think is lower tier Tarantino, but one of my faves of the year. there's also Seven Pyschopaths, which I like a lot. But the rest of that list doesn't move m needle at all. And if that's the strongest films of the year, that's a pretty weak year.

On the flip side, different tastes make the world go round. No year will be completely without good movies, but 2012 is definitely on the lower end for me. More meh than bad.

That said, 2015 and 2011 are the only two years I truly feel were bad years (and 2015 looks a lot beter if we shift Ex Machina to pair with Mad Max). Maybe 2019, as I tend to see movies a year late, but my early impressions aren't good.
