He has some pretty good range, but this was legit awesome. He earned that Oscar.

He was nominated for the Oscar, but didn't win. It went to Javier Bardem for No Country for Old Men. You could probably argue that Bardem was the lead in No Country, but that Oscar went to DDL for There Will Be Blood.

His closest role to this was In the Bedroom, where he's kinda sleepy eyed and wishy washy through the whole thing.

That was a loaded category that year:
Javier Bardem – No Country for Old Men as Anton Chigurhdouble-dagger
Casey Affleck – The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford as Robert "Bob" Ford
Philip Seymour Hoffman – Charlie Wilson's War as Gustav "Gust" Avrakotos
Hal Holbrook – Into the Wild as Ron Franz
Tom Wilkinson – Michael Clayton as Arthur Edens

Honestly, Clooney was probably the weakest link in the main cast of this film, and he did a pretty damned good job. The writing was very good. Swinton and Wilkinson are usually outstanding, but I think these are their best and that more or less is what makes this movie special.

Sydney Pollock, as usual, was outstanding as well.

One of my favorite corporate intrigue films, I could probably quote most of it since I’ve seen it so many times. The opening sequence with Wilkinson’s meltdown and that great tracking shot all the way around the war room is outstanding work.

Pollack (R.I.P.) is so damn good, and especially as an attorney.

I watched the extras and apparently the shots of Clooney fidgeting with his car’s display were a huge pain in the arse to film, as he was actually driving with no green screen or cgi tricks.

Tremendously underrated movie.

Clooney absolutely deserved the Oscar for Best Actor that year. He definitely pulled off the hanging by a thread, conflicted corporate cleaner perfectly.
