How great is Michael Clayton?

One of the best opening monologues ever. Tom Wilkinson and Tilda Swinton giving the performances of their respective careers. Clooney in stellar mid/late-career form. The camerawork and editing are excellent. The script, I mean, Tony Gilroy has a case for grand larceny after Diablo Cody stole his Oscar that year - and I say that as someone who really enjoyed Juno.
This was right up there with the best legal thrillers ever.

Some people I think don't get how great the film is because it gets a little Philosophical with book and the horse stuff, but I would agree, it's the best legal Thriller at least that I've very seen.
It's also just happened to come out the bets year of filmmaking probably since 1997 or 98.
Mid 00's had some not so sneaky and incredibly well done films. Besides No Country, There Will Be Blood etc, you had Children of Men, Michael Clayton, Blood Diamond, Pans Labyrinth, The Prestige, Apocalyptio, Collateral, etc etc.
You had the current A liters like Inarritu, Nolan, Del Toro, coming into their primes and Gibson and Mann still putting out top notch stuff.
In hindsight, it was actually a very great time for movies. The market hadn't been corrupted by comic book films yet and social media didn't exist and the social justice faction hadn't yet called everything racist and a human travesty if it didn't cater to the finge, and the "millennial" trends hadn't yet taken hold.
They actually still tried to just make quality stuff with excellent writing and acting.
And yes Gilroy should've won for original screenplay.

some legal liberties were taken and the "gotcha" moment was meh, but it was a very good movie.
"just drive." so awesome

2007 was the definition of stacked.
Dramas
No Country for Old Men
There Will Be Blood
Michael Clayton
Zodiac
Atonement
La Vie en Rose
Eastern Promises
The Assassaination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Lars and the Real Girl
Gone Baby Gone
Juno
Comedies
Superbad
Hot Fuzz
Knocked Up
Walk Hard
Ratatouille
Enchanted
Reno 911!: Miami
Not even getting into a bunch of fun popcorn movies like Smokin' Aces, 300, Blades of Glory, Grindhouse, etc
I think I went to the movies more that year than in like the 5 years combined following it, and I still missed a ton.

Scrappy WR willing to get dirty and block. Never going to put up Randy Moss numbers but a dependable target and great route runner.

I liked it but only really remember the blow job quote, might have to watch it again

He didn't really make it in the pros though. He had a really good rookie year then just completely disappeared. I've always wondered about that.

Clooney has had some really really good movies, which is hard to admit because I can't stand him.
Michael Clayton
The American
Oceans 11
Up in the Air
O brother...
are probably my 5 favorites of his.

Up in the Air aka the movie that gave me a crush on Anna Kendrick.
Vera Farmiga was in it too.
Syriana and The Descendents were both great.

I self-admittedly watch too many movies as well, but he's right...2017 was stacked. I saw all of those movies he listed either in theaters or as rentals when they were first released with the exception of Enchanted, Reno 911, and La Vie en Rose.

I think I saw 7 or 8 of those in theaters, back when I was in college and footloose and fancy free. The rest were rentals or HBO.
These days, my wife and I prefer to just order them OnDemand. We see almost as many oldies in theaters during Flashback Cinema weekends as we do new releases.

It's very good and Tilda Swinton plays a perfect neurotic morally unethical sociopathic lawyer...
But it's bonafides as a legal thriller is loose.
It's more just a thriller.
Presumed Innocent and A Civil Action are two classic legal thrillers that are better - especially A Civil Action where lawyers aren't hiring hitmen to kill other lawyers or witnesses.

Watched it in theaters when I was 18 and almost walked out... HATED it and wanted the 2 hours back
As I've gotten older and wiser and with a few rewatches... it's really REALLY good and can't believe I hated it for so long

A fantastic movie that I enjoy watching from time to time. The whole scene where they kill Tom Wilkersons character was great.
Clooney was at his prime during that time.

Question: Would you say that Wilkinson was cast against type this role?
Or no?
He has some pretty good range, but this was legit awesome. He earned that Oscar.

It’s a really strong and fairly quiet piece. I love it. Michael Clayton, up in the air and The American are easily three of my favorite movies featuring George Clooney.

Back in the early 2010s we were going to 20-25 movies a year.

Love it. Tom Wilkinson kills it
