this is my problem with "the wire"
i swear i've started that first fricking episode about 16x now and haven't even gotten all the way through it.
3 months later i put it on again as a refresher..fall asleep again.
i know its supposed to be a great show but frick..i can't get through episode 1.

Maybe it has been over hyped.
True with most great shows. The only ones I wasn't underwhelmed with were The Wire and The Sopranos.

All I ever saw on this board was awesome, amazing, GOAT. Maybe that is why I am feeling underwhelmed.
I have to say that if you like 1 hour dramas, there are few in the same league - having said that, it is a process. It doesn't hit you up front like The Sopranos or The Shield, it is more of a slow burner like The Wire. It is better than Mad Men, for sure, and probably in the same conversation with Sopranos/Wire/Shield, if you're into that sort of thing.
I would just forget the praise and accept that many, many folks enjoyed the entire run, and, I would agree that it gets better and better - not perfect (nothing is) - but the effort to craft the characters and story are all A+. The results will vary from viewer to viewer.

i dont know if you're talking about the episode with the train, but that's my favorite episode out of all the seasons.

My favorite is "4 days out" (The RV's battery is dead) - which I would recommend to the OP as a second firewall - if he's not sold by Grilled (Season 2, Episode 2) - but doesn't exactly want to give up, push on to Season 2, Episode 9. If I was thinking about turning back before that one, I was sold on the hype at that point.

some shows, you just have to bear through the filler to get to the meat. some people want the meat right away...just doesn't happen too often with tv shows.

You say "filler", I say, "character development" and storytelling, but I understand your broad point. Even BB fans are polarized on "The Fly" for example.

It never does. Show sucks so much. Stop watching now and save yourself some time.

I started almost the exact thread when I did the same exact thing. Almost everything in all of the replies are spot on. Get into S2 and it just gets better and better. S1 was a LOT of setup for storylines and characters, but it pays off.

When did I get hooked? Two words: Fulminated Mercury..
ETA: It's season 1, Episode 6. While the first episode introduces the awesome premise of the show, several episodes drag after that. Episode 6 is where Walt is transformed into his alter ego. That's when the real fun starts. If someone says they watched past that episode and wasn't hooked, I'll allow it.

If you don't like it after 4 episodes then it's not for you.

I am 4 episodes in and I feel very Meh... about the show so far.
I am having the same problem. I have watched the first 6 episodes so far.
Am I supposed to like any of the characters I have met so far? I can't stand any of them. Am I supposed to care that the main character has cancer, when he barely acknowledges it himself? Am I supposed to care that his wife is pregnant when she's such a bitch to everyone around her? Her sister and BIL absolutely suck. I really just want to fast forward through every scene the wife and sister have. I have mild interest in Cranston's meth dealing partner, but it's not enough to make me wonder what happens to him next. Cranston himself just grosses me out. When do I start caring about these people???

No, you are not supposed to like them. No one really likes any of the characers. They are all fatally flawed. There are a few I like despite their issues because I find them entertaining. There might only be a couple who aren't total shitbags. But I do find them interesting.
