where we saw how many times the mother almost met Ted. Would've been great if they had woven their near misses into the finale with the meeting being the big ending scene.

That idea reminds me of one of my favorite episodes of Frasier that also plays with fate. It basically deals with 2 timelines, with Frasier being far different in both. In one, he runs into "Jane" (can't remember the actual name) accidentally in the cafe. They begin dating, frasier is completely infatuated with her, goes the whole 9 yards, is sky high, etc. In the second timeline, he drops something in the cafe so Jane runs into "Joe" instead. Frasier is single, alone, and miserable. Both timelines have Frasier attending a big event a few days later. In TL1 things come to a head and jane dumps frasier, and as she walks away bumps into Joe. Was meant to be. TL2 Frasier is at the ball still, but fed up with how things are going. As he leaves, both timelines "merge" as his car comes to rest at a stoplight as he is listening to his show that day and a woman caller hitting on him asking him to come to her workplace that night. As the 2 timelines merge into 1, he turns around at the intersection and goes to get her.

That was off topic and kind of long winded, but I am really fascinated by that concept, and the one in HIMYM of how the universe works like that sometimes. I'm single, but for all I know I could have been in the same room, at the same bar, in the same group of friends, etc..with my future wife and not even known it.

Substitue "Nora" for Robin and you can say the same fricking thing about the seasons before that.

Yep. Which shows that Robin & Barney Part 2 was done strictly as filler. It ruined the potential for both characters. The ending for Barney would made more of an impact if he had always been the player who absolutely refused to settle down....never showing the capability to really have a deep love for someone.

It takes Classic Barney to finally show him what he really needed in his life to be content, a daughter to show his love as a father to.

Do ya'll expect him to live as a eunuch now that he has a kid? Especially a kid he will probably only see half the time or less depending on how visitation works out for him.

We all have many loves and it doesn’t make any of them less valid.

i knew baloo would bring the thunder.

i'm guessing the ted-tracy relationship was about ten yrs (the daughter looks about 16 if not older, right?)
that's not insignificant nor does it become irrelavant with her dying. life is a long series of ups and downs.

i don't have a problem with them not writing ted and tracy into the sunset together. if they follow that path then bob saget really sucks at naming his horrifically long stories....

this way, not only does ted find true love and happiness but he gets a second chance after fate robs him of his wife.

if anything, tracy is the perfect person for ted in an imperfect world where good people die all th time. when she's gone (6 damn years later) he looks to robin. i don't feel that robin was ever his perfect love like tracy ended up being. but being perfect for each other and being right for each other are two different things.

that's why the whole series, in essence, is about the ted/robin relationship, bc it's about a dad asking permission from his kids for a second chance at love. we just don't know that until the last episode.

i hated all the episodes/storylines where ted just wouldn't let robin go and vice versa. i thought it was one of the shows' biggest problems. the finale actually put it all into place.

Maybe not eunuch, but whether you buy it or not, thats what the writers are implying

Kids can change your life, ya know.

Oh I know, I also know a lot about children that are divided between two individuals.

All the writers did was give you a glimpse into what Barney right after it happened, it's completely our imagination that drives the story now. So him banging out chicks is just as likely as him becoming gay and marrying a guy named David or just finding someone to settle down with to raise his daughter and sharing her with #31.

Same with Ted and Robin, does she invite him up again and they go at it or does the night end again with him failing to get her yet again...

The story is ours now, we can make it what we want.

I will point out there is a wide chasm between "eunuch" and "libertine". Most older single people can find that rather wide middle ground. Barney, midway through that episode, essentially saying "I tried being an adult, but ti didn't work out, so screw it" was just so depressing. I'm glad the writers didn't end him there, nor could they, but it does call into question why they needed him to get married at all. Just have the baby be the transforming moment.

I do wish we had gotten a more proper goodbye for Tracy. I have no problem with her dying, and we know why the kids are okay with the Robin stories -- it's been six f'n years -- but Tracy did get short shrift. But we were prepared for it.

The Drive by Tuckers were right - the secret to a happy ending is knowing when to roll the credits.

And that was the cool part of HIMYM. It was relevant in so many ways to those of us who watched it from our mid-20's to early 30's. The relationships we go through, experiences we have, and jobs we take that take us to becoming full fledged adults. When HIMYM stuck with those stories, it was money.

I met my wife through a series of circumstance similar to this show....so maybe I'm projecting a bit. But chances are many people...including you...have so many near misses with their future spouse that we'd be surprised. There's no doubt I probably nearly met my wife multiple times before it actually happened....but if one thing had gone differently the night we met, there's a great chance we could've never ended up with each other. If we had met years before or months after, chances are our futures would've been different. I know many relationships that start that way.

HIMYM was building towards that. Having Ted (and Tracy) weave through certain obstacles of young adulthood so fate could place them at the wedding/train station at that moment in their lives should've been the legacy of the show and would've hit home with those of us who found the one and given hope to those still looking....but unfortunately the opportunity to stick that landing was missed.

That is still you projecting that he tried being an adult. If you have problems with adults who behave in that fashion, that is for you to work out your conservative views on relationships, not the character. He made his speech about accepting who he is as a person, you obviously couldn't take him for who he is... He was still that person with Robin, it is just he focused all of it into Robin. See when their marriage was ending, instead of dealing with it they got drunk and screwed. That's Barney.

That ending does make the kids look like dicks for rolling their eyes so much while their father pours his heart out about their dead mother

Right. He made that speech trying to convince us he wasn't profoundly unhappy, which he was. Which is why he was hiding behind lies, and he even points to how he failed in his relationship with Robin. And then... he gives THE SAME EXACT speech when his daughter is born. Word for word.

Let that be a thematic hint.

That he was profoundly happy to have a kid and he is going to love that kid? Sure I believe he has found the one for him, but his life outside of that one kid doesn't just stop especially being in the situation he is in with the mother. He still very much has a lot of life to live. He may not even see the kid but every tuesday and every other weekend.

Why can't you accept that maybe Barney is happy being the slut runner that he is? People can be happy living like that, people ARE happy living like that.

His speech was made in the glorious afterglow of having his first kid, as was the joke of sending the girls home to put on something else.

Because the show repeatedly showed us he wasn't.

Ive been thinking about the final and have some mixed feelings.. Mainly the ending of course..

The show itself has always been about Ted finding love, falling into love and then being broken. After some thought, Im ok with the ending because it represents Teds reality throughout the entire series. He found the one that he was meant to be with but lost her. He went on with his life only to find the lost love the show began with.

IT doesnt diminish the mother or her importance. She was Ted's perfect match he sought throughout the show and in keeping with the shows reality, he lost her and thus the circle begins again.
