It wasn't that Dean did not drink or could get blitzed, but when he was working he did not. He was a true professional and the drink angle was part of his stage persona.
Now, later on , he could tie them on, and after the death of his son, Dino, he pretty much climbed into a bottle. Jerry Lewis would talk about it. Said that accident also killed Dean.

From kindergarten until the summer after the 4th grade I lived next door to a lady who was a huge Dean Martin fan. I can remember her getting excited during the day of the week that his show aired. She would start saying Deano comes on tonight. As a kid, I thought she was a really cool lady, even if she did whip me a couple of times for something like cussing. She drove a yellow 1956 Thunderbird convertible that was as clean as the one below. The crazy part of her situation was she was married to a WWII vet who, I think got drunk every day. Her daughter and I were the same age, and we played together. If I was at her house, and her dad was watching sports, he'd make us come into their den and stand at attention for the National Anthem.
The daughter made a very pretty lady who was a Warbonnet at NLU.
In 1967, she was still driving that car. The guy who lived across from them bought a new RS Camaro like the one below.
The sister of my brother's best friend, who lived around the coner, had new a blue SS Camaro like this.
I laugh at you guys who think the 80's and 90's were great. They ain't a pimple on the 60's and 70's arse.
