No cheap jump scares…just very disturbing images and dialogue. A thinking man’s horror.

I couldn't have said it better myself. The thing that got to me the most is that the family never really stood a chance. It was all planned by the grandmother and her cult. The family was manipulated into fulfilling the bargain with the demon. The little girl had to die so that the demon could have a male host body. Remember the weird letter that Toni Collette's character found from her mother? It basically said that all of the suffering she would have to endure would be worth it in the end.

Toni Collette grieving on the floor after the daughter was killed is as close as it gets to real life. She nailed her performance in this.

She put on a master class in acting. No doubt her finest work and she deserved the Academy Award for her performance. I have seen first hand the reaction of a parent who lost a child. They became unhinged in their grief. She captured the raw emotion perfectly.

Sorry, I barely made it to the end.

I bailed and looked up the spoiler with 40m left. Not great. The House That Jack Built was disturbing, but didn't feel as slow as Hereditary.

love horror films that make you feel extremely unsettled and nervy. That’s exactly what this one did the first time I saw it.

There was legit nervous laughter from two or three people near me who were freaked out.

Meticulously designed film

Absolutely. Although I think every major part was well portrayed. The last horror movie that well cast and executed was possibly the Omen with Gregory Peck.
