Isn’t this a doc? Just kind of odd to describe a doc about actual murdered children as “very True Detective like”

it is, but watch this first episode and tell me it doesn't have that vibe
the intro and the conspiracy theory aspect

Is this about the missing kids? Is it a docuseries? Or have actors?

It’s about the events surrounding the “Atlanta Monster” from the late 70s and early 80s. He was a serial killer who targeted younger boys and small young men. He’s name is Wayne Williams. There were also political issues that played a major role in the case so I’m sure they’ll touch on that too.

I was in school at that time and the murders all happened while GT was in session. Of course, that is most of the time, but people used to kid me about whether I did it because they never happened when I wasn't in Atlanta. Maybe there were 2 they went back and attributed to him later were before I started school but the rest were like clockwork.
terrible story, most of those kids already had it tough

There was that doc that with that white guy who supposedly confessed to pretty much every unsolved murder in the country.
Police were like, okay that's good enough for us.
Always tremendous political pressure to tidy up unsolved murders or ease fears...we got our guy.
But not sure about this doc. Some guy just compared Atlanta to Wakanda. And then you're thinking, this is a serious doc right?

I think he was only convicted on the 2 older victims but wouldn’t admit to all the others. Without spoiling anything it’s obvious he was the guy but if I know HBO they’re gonna try and raise suspicion of his guilt.

Wayne Williams was guilty as sin. I listened to Atlanta Monster, and it was really quite disturbing how calm and collected he was during everything. Total psychopath. The racial angles they took in the podcast will be cranked up to 11 for HBO, which is a shame. The more interesting story was touched on for a moment in the podcast- Williams was connected to a pedophile ring and had multiple aliases.

I agree. Most shows about people being murdered don't get that graphic in showing bodies, especially in clear photos. If they show a body it is usually pixilated to there is no real definition.
Seeing pictures of those young kids lying dead was done strictly for sensationalism.
I was in my 20's when these murders first started taking place and at first there was a lot of talk about the killer being a white guy. There was no way in hell a white guy was going to get that close to those kids, abduct them and kill them without being noticed by others in the community, especially in the numbers that the killer finally achieved.
They can raise all the doubt they want about Wayne Williams, but the truth is, the murders stopped when he was arrested. Coincidence????
That was a serial killer at work, and serial killers simply do not stop murdering if someone else gets convicted for their crimes.

I actually let out an involuntary scream.
Atlanta looks like shite in that documentary, exposed for what it truly is, in the words of a northern journalist,..."Mayberry with skyscrapers", that had the stupid good fortune of Delta Airlines relocating it's HQ from Monroe, LA.

The community there retains this fantasy that "the klan" somehow preyed on black kids in metro Atlanta (and surrounding areas), plucking them from the street, in black neighborhoods, in broad daylight with no witnesses.
No reasonable person can believe such a thing without some evidence. A number of these kids were known "hustlers" - thus perfect targets for a serial killer (they often prey on sex workers). I'm convinced Williams did it because, once in custody, the killings stopped. All of the circumstantial evidence tying him to many of the victims is impressive as well.

And Fincher has moved on.
So, the chance isn't technically "0%" that the show will return, but it is effectively 0%.
So "cancelled*"? Is that better?

Damn, they cancelled* the series? I was looking forward to season 3.

Another true crime project about murdered kids? There’s definitely not too many of those.

I thought it (Mindhunter) was well done. They pushed the closeted lesbian doctor and the tough cop's son is a "serial killer in the making" bits a little too hard (I mean, reasonably mild for Fincher), but not to the point of distraction.
The real focus on the killers and the work of the FBI profile team was solid and very, very interesting. The actors for the killers were all spot on.
