Recently i have watched a few Amazon Original series such as goliath and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and came away really impressed. i dont recall the last netflix original series i was really impressed with.
Has Amazon passed netflix on making original series?

Maybe not sure I know they don't get near the buzz netflix does about their new series.

Eh. Maybe? Amazon has certainly made better original movies than Netflix.

But there are still plenty of Netflix original series that I enjoy, moreso than Amazon, but then again, Amazon doesn't have nearly as many as Netflix.

I really don't understand this new trend to hate on Netflix constantly right now. We have one of these threads weekly now complaining about Netflix original series.

A lot of their content is crap, but a lot of it is great. Too many people sleep on their documentaries. They are putting out so much right now it isn't all going to stick. Let them work out what work and what doesn't. They will get it eventually.

Mindhunter and Glow both really impressed me (on Netflix).

There hasn't been an Amazon series yet that I haven't lost interest in and quit early.

Man in the High Castle and (recently picked up) The Expanse puts them clearly ahead of Netflix - other than their recent documentary series (Making a Murderer, Wild, Wild Country and Evil Genius), which I don't watch any of.

We were watching The Good Place, but I quickly lost interest.

I'd say it's more like Amazon is starting to catch up and is swinging for the fences with their next generation of big budget shows like LOTR and The 3 Body Problem. Netflix had a pretty big lead though. With the binge release format it's easy to forget the quality shows Netflix has put out.

Amazon Tier 1

Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Catastrophe
Electric Dreams
Sneaky Pete
Man in the High Castle
The Expanse
Goliath
Grand Tour
Bosch
Mozart in the Jungle

Netflix Tier 1

House of Cards
Orange is the New Black
Black Mirror
Stranger Things
Peaky Blinders
Mind Hunter
Last Kingdom
Ozark
Altered Carbon
Half the Marvel shows/seasons
A Series of Unfortunate Events
Narcos
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Glow
The Crown
Master of None
Marco Polo

That's off the top of my head and it leaves out a lot of Netflix shows that have gotten decent buzz but I haven't seen like Making a Murderer, American Vandal. Can the very best of Amazon match the very best of Netflix? I think they've gotten there but Netflix still has many more shows worth watching.

Peaky Blinders and Expanse are both third party, correct?

Why do people keep posting threads about this same topic? Soon this board will only have threads that fall into one of these categories:

-TLJ
-Black Panther
-Series recommendations
-Amazon v Netflix originals

If they don't give me season 3 of Man in the High Castle, I'm going to drive to Seattle and punch Jeff Bezos in the throat.

It's a gray area. Amazon is taking over production of The Expanse for season 4, it's unclear whether they get international streaming rights too or if those still belong to Netflix. A show like Peaky Blinders may not be a Netflix produced original, but they are footing the bill for part of the production and they are the only way to see it legally here. They are paying 75% of the cost for Star Trek Discovery to stream it everywhere but the US and Canada. Is that a CBS show or a Netflix Original? To us it's a CBS show, but Netflix is paying more of the cost than CBS, like I said, it's a gray area.

I think exclusives and originals should be seen about the same. If it's the only way you can legally watch it in your region, does it really matter that some network in another country produced it? Netflix had a deal with AMC where the UK got to see Breaking Bad the same day or next day I think. If that was the only way for the people in the UK to see a great show that Netflix was helping to foot the bill for, why shouldn't Netflix get to stamp their name on it? Maybe they should call it an exclusive instead of an original, but that's semantics.

I've given Red Oaks several episodes and it's just not in the top tier IMO. There are plenty of 2nd tier Netflix comedies I didn't mention also like Love, Friends from College, Atypical and The Ranch. I probably missed a few tier 1 comedies as well simply because I've never seen them, BoJack Horseman seems to get a lot of buzz for example and is probably tier 1. I'm not sure where to place Santa Clarita diet, I think it's 2nd tier, but like Bojack it seems to have a pretty high profile.

Even if we did come up with a complete list and let the board rank them though I think the result would be the same. Netflix has more shows worth watching, but Amazon is starting to catch up in terms of quantity and in terms of quality it's best shows can more or less stand toe to toe with Netflix's best shows.

you mean scrotall recall.
i still can't believe someone green-lit the original title, it is really good however. antonia thomas

Also, i don't think anybody has mentioned Patriot yet for amazon. that and mrs. maisel are by far my two favorites, of their actual original shows. catastrophe and fleabag are also great, but amazon didn't create those two.

Will have to watch Patriot, I guess.

Mrs. Maisel is the only Amazon original that I have really thought was great.

Catastrophe and Red Oaks were great their 1st seasons, but fell off pretty quick after that. We shall see how Mrs. Maisel does.

Patriot is such a fantastic and strange show. It is infinitely quotable, and the characters are amazing.
