Halle Berry was sent fake script by Fox to entice her to sign on for X3: The Last Stand

Matthew Vaughn was originally on board to direct the movie but left the project when he learned that 20th Century Fox had sent Halle Berry a fake script with an extended story arc for her character in an effort to make sure she returned to the franchise. Vaughn was replaced by Brett Ratner to direct and the rest, as they say, is history.

I understand that no one is going to feel bad for Halle Berry on this, and for obvious reasons… she’s clearly doing just fine
BUT, it must really suck to live in a world where every commitment made to you needs to be in iron clad, lawyer reviewed and approved, physical writing in order to have any capacity to believe that it will come true. I get that the business world is different from the interpersonal interaction world and all, but still, I don’t think these executives even bat an eye at doing something this plainly immoral and wrong. It’s got to be a horrible world to live in when you can never take anyone you interact with at their word.
Within that type of broken ecosystem, it’s not a particular surprise that so many Hollywood elites have such a fundamentally broken view of the world… they can’t ever trust anyone in their own inner circle of friends and collaborators, so why would they ever trust the rest of us a half a countryside away.
Just seems like a terrible way to live.

or....and hear me out here, maybe it was that Vaughn saw that Fox was willing to bold face lie to an actress to get her int he movie, and decided frick this - if they are gonna do that, then what is to stop them from interfering in what I am doing?
props to Vaughn getting out of there

He did. And Berry stayed on and did the movie and made plenty of money.
And surely wondered why the script was changed.
Based on their comments, Vaughn and Berry are on good terms with one another and blame the studio. I agree with them.

Oh yea, none of my critique was geared towards Vaughn… it was all about the shitty studio execs

I do wonder how often this sort of thing happens in Hollywood. It's very plausible imo.
"Hey big-name actor. We want you to star in our upcoming film"
"Ok, but I need to see the script first. The story and the character needs to be very compelling"
Hands fake script. "Sure thing, here you go"
"This looks great, I'm in"
"Hey sorry bud, we actually had to do some re-writes. We now want to go in a different direction with the film. Your character is completely changed from what we discussed. If you don't like the changes, well tough shite. You signed a contract"
