What was the whole thing with Channing Tatum's character? That movie just seemed like a jumbled mess and the ending was just kinda like "here, it's over"

I feel the same way. The whole communist thing felt waaaayyyyy over the top. I think the Coens tried to be too cute with this one and it failed.

It's a movie that's filled with movie takes and bring nothing to the story.

You didn't miss anything. They never explained anything. They showed him with the briefcase like we're gonna get down to the bottom of this, then he left... Aaannnnnd, roll credits. Pretty much no climax or payoff on anything. The more I think about it the less I liked it

Whatever Hail, Caesar! is about, I don't get it.

Not a fan.

If they had focused on the "study group" it could've been a good film. If they's focused on the cowboy actor and his new director, it could've been a great film. It had a lot of interesting ideas, but they didn't follow through on any of them. In the end it was about a guy deciding if he should take a job offer. Boring.

Ethan and Joel Coen's Hail, Caesar! grossed an underwhelming $4.3 million from 2,222 theaters Friday for a projected $11.6 million debut, the lowest nationwide start of the duo's directing career.

Projected to get beat by Kung Fu Panda 3.

That's sad because it looked like such a great concept.

Saw Hail, Caesar today and I have to say I'm very underwhelmed by it.

Mrs. Midnight loved it. Her new favorite Coen movie. I liked it, but I would put their better films ahead of it, for sure.

I do think they tried to do too much - or conversely - cut it to too short a running time.

They had Fiennes for 1 scene, Lambert for 1 scene, Clancy Brown for 2 very short bits, and so forth as others have said.

If they were going to do this, I would have made it a 2-parter. I get where they were going - an homage to the Golden Age of Hollywood - that early 50s vibe when things were really changing. Also, as huge film fans themselves, the Coens wanted to direct a western scene and a biblical epic scene without doing a whole movie. They also did a musical/dance number, a water ballet number, etc. A self-indulgent project that hits in some areas (the religious figures arguing, among other things, trinitarianism/unitarianism/arianism, etc. in a highly entertaining way, and Fiennes/Ehrenreich great scene), misses in others (the commies/blacklisting, etc.) and is sort of so-so with Brolin's story.

(ETA: The last film with Lambert AND Clancy Brown was Highlander, 30 years ago, FTR, and they were the protagonist/antagonist).

Fiennes/Ehrenreich great scene

Despite the film's mediocrity, those were both great scenes.

yeah, that's why i felt like it was a jumbled mess. b/c like you say, nothing was developed, it was like introduced and moved on from. nothing seemed finished. I think that's why i wondered how long this movie was b/c nothing was wrapping up.

First movie I left the theater early during. Took the girlfriend after dinner tonight, we left after the random arse changing Tatum gay navy scene. The only scene that even made me Crack a smile was the arguing religious figures....
