I believe he wanted seal the tunnel by flooding the tunnel and letting it freeze. I think it is too late for that. As soon as they abandon to flood it I believe the wildings would storm through.

You can't just blow up the tunnel, you've got to carry in tons of rocks and water and freeze it. It would take at least a week working non-stop to freeze the tunnel.

ah gotcha. i thought they could just blow it and have it collapse.

Reading about the nightfort got me thinking...
What are the oldest man made structures in westeros? Over 6,000 years old:
Nightfort/the wall
Fist of the first men
Moat Cailin
Winterfell
The Eyrie
Any others? Maybe something in dorne built by the andals?

Another question about the gate...it looked like all Sam had to do was wave his hands in the air and the gate opened. Does Jon not have that ability? If so, why didn't Jon open the gate himself? Will Jon be able to open the gate from the other side or does someone have to stand down there and wait for him to come back?

I think Sam just waved to another nights watch brother , to open it
To return, Jon will either have to go thru the secret nightfort tunnel Sam knows about, or blow a horn 1 time when returning.
1 for friends
2 for wildlings
3 for white walkers
Jon wouldn't be able to open the castle black gate by himself.

Storm's End and Casterly Rock are up there, and the Dreadfort has been around for a while too.

I think it is like any other gate on a castle, opens from the inside but not outside.

Ah yes. I wish they'd show those two castles in the show.

They are outnumbered 1,000 to one. And the other team has giants.

Not to mention they aren't exactly working with the cream of the crop as far as their members go these days.

Excuses. How could men spend every day of their lives in pursuit of something and suck so bad at it?

Considering 95% of them are either criminals or lowborn, that's why they lack discipline and don't have much training. The Night's Watch is no longer the prestigious order that it once was.

When honor is not the order of the day, there will not be many people "volunteering" for the Night's Watch. It's interesting that the only family with "honor" (Starks) have one of their own (kind of) volunteer for The Night's Watch. For 99% of the rest, it is used as a punishment or a way to get out of jail/execution.

They also lost most of their top leadership prior to the attack-
Qhorin Halfhand, Thoren Smallwood, Jeor Mormont,Jaremy Rykker, & Benjen Stark where all lost prior to the wildlings attack.
