We know they do IRL. There was a remark on another thread that the Corleone famly only killed those who had it coming.
This was one of the contemporary criticisms of the movie, that it whitewashed the mafia ("After all, we're not murderers"). Many of the characters from the novel were softened for the film. Luca Brasi is almost a comic relief character in the movie. In the book he's a monster.

Neri was also over the top in the book.

I didn't mention him b/c he's such a minor character in the first film and is never really established (IIRC he doesn't have a single line of dialogue GF 1).

One of the few things that are superior in the book, aside from the sheer volume of journalistic detail, is that the characters come across as rougher and more like actual gangsters.

That wasn't Neri, it was the guy who went on to become Michael's bodyguard and is killed in Hyman Roth's hospital room in Havana.

Never doubt my Godfather knowledge.

quote:

Some time later, Geary spends the night with a prostitute in a brothel run by Michael's brother Fredo in the Nevada desert. Having suffered from an alcoholic blackout, he awakens in a bed covered in blood next to the woman, who is dead. Corleone family consigliere Tom Hagen arrives on the scene and tells a terrified Geary that since the woman has no family, the matter can be safely covered up. Hagen promises Geary, "All that will be left is our friendship." It is implied that the Corleones have engineered this situation, perhaps through drugging Geary. Michael's personal assassin, Al Neri, is seen in the bathroom wiping his hands with a towel, indicating that it was he who murdered the prostitute.

The more I watch those movies, the higher they move on my list.

Still don't quite get why Hyman Roth was simultaneously trying to kill Michael while needing his help for establishing operations in Cuba. It seems to be a contradiction.

This is worse than the op's question.

I skip all that on the re-reads. Don't care what the bridesmaid does in Vegas.
