Confirming the film would in fact feature a team of fresh faces, Aykroyd tells Larry King, “It’s based upon new research that’s being done in particle physics by the young men and women at Columbia University… Basically, there’s research being done that I can say that the world or the dimension that we live in, our four planes of existence—length, height, width and time—become threatened by some of the research that’s being done and Ghostbusters—new Ghostbusters—have to come and solve the problem.”
He also revealed Bill Murray is still holding out, but there will always be a place for him if he changes his mind: “If Billy wants to walk in the door and be in the movie, we will find a place.”
so what exactly has changed?

You can't do Ghostbusters without Venkman. Even in a limited role, it still doesn't work without Peter.
Murray said on an interview on Letterman he wasn't opposed to doing the sequel, it just had to be a good script. Otherwise, why waste their time?
They got him to do voiceovers for the Video Game a few years ago, which I bought and it wasn't bad. The gameplay wasn't great, but the story was good. Bill Murray looks like a guy that likes to have a good time, but is not going to waste his time just to make a quick buck. Hell, they got him to do the GOAT cameo in Zombieland.

If Murray doesn't want in, there's probably a good reason.

Who cares about Bill Murray, I just want to see Rick Moranis come back.
