As a Civil War buff, I absolutely adore this movie and highly recommend it to anyone who has yet to see it. It's over four hours long but it features Tom Berenger, Jeff Daniels, and Martin Sheen. Daniels even got some Oscar buzz back then - he's REALLY good in this film. The effects and production values are a little outdated but it was originally intended to be a TNT Miniseries.

I also thought it was one of the better Civil War movies.

Just like the war itself, I think there may be a little revisionist history going on.

I seem to remember all of the criticism of this movie being tepid at best.

I could be thinking of another movie. Is this the one funded by Turner?

Fantastic film, Jeff Daniels and Stephen Lang were both great in it. However, I can't watch it and not think about the epic fail that was Gods and Generals, possibly the worst movie of all time.

A lot of the criticism was over the fact the movie casts a sympathetic light on both sides.

Some were pissed off that they movie didn't depict all southern soldiers aa slave owning, women raping, children kicking, puppy killing , rainbow pissing, unicorn stabbing assholes.

Great film abd played it about as even as a film can.

Some overdramatic acting on the part of the late Richard Jordan as Lo Armisted. "Not both of us!...Not all of us!"

MUCH better than Gods and Generals.

Yes. He even plays a role in it as a colonel and gets shot.

Sheen was absolutely horrendous in this movie. His "southern accent" Berranger and Daniels stole the show though.

This was one of my favorite movies from childhood and I still love to pop it in and watch it. It's double sided on my DVD copy

Damn, Captain Brainiac.

I actually saw this one during college at the movies. There was an intermission of about 20 minutes. Some old people congratulated me and my friend on caring enough to attend such a long movie.

Own the film. Just watched it again a few weeks back.

It can get tedious at times, but some of the acting is great and yes, some it way over the the top.

Production values are 100% better than Gods & Generals. I was never able to finish all of that one.

There were many things wrong with Gods and Generals. The first problem was the fact that very little of the film comes from the actual novel. There are many scenes and characters that are nowhere to be found in the book. The movie adaptation tries to make it about Stonewall Jackson but the book was so much more than that.

Another problem was the dialogue. Once again, very little of it comes from the actual book. The dialogue is very tedious and long winded and actually had me, a Civil War buff, rolling my eyes and shifting in my seat as I sat there watching these characters give speeches that seemed so rehearsed and contrived that it's not even funny. In the novel the characters actually talked like regular people that you could relate to.

One last problem I had with the movie are the actors. Gods and Generals is supposed to be a prequel to Gettysburg. Yet, Gods and Generals was filmed 10 years after Gettysburg and with many of the same actors playing the same roles. As much as I love Jeff Daniels, he shouldn't have played Chamberlain in Gods and Generals. Chamberlain was 34 years old in 1862 while Jeff Daniels was 48 in 2003.

i disagree. he didn't deliver the best performance of the film obviously, but he wasn't horrendous. Stephen Lang did an excellent job, as did Beringer and Daniels. all-in-all just a great movie, despite it's length it holds your interest throughout.

"See you in hell, Billy Yank."
"See you in hell, Johnny Reb."

Saw this in 7th grade, our American History teacher gave us extra credit if we brought her a ticket stub. I haven't watched it in years, but now I just may have to again.
