Season 2 hasn't been greenlit yet, but everything I've read says its pretty much a sure thing.

I'm interested to see how they handle AFFC if they get that far. Personally, I think they will combine parts of AFFC and the next book to make either one or two seasons.

AFFC just has too many periphery characters and not enough happening to translate to TV.

Yea, AFFC is only half of what was supposed to be one book so it'd have to be combined w/ ADWD. ASOS will be split into two seasons accd to GRRM, but there's such a crazy amount of shite that goes down in that one it won't matter

I was glad that GoT wasn't like that. I'm sure more magic and fantasy elements will be introduced but from what I've heard it isn't too bad.
it grows as the series progresses bc of what happens at the end of the first book, but it's never central to the story and mainly stays on the periphery and he sets it up to where its pretty grounded

AFFC sucked because Cersei is terrible as a pov character. The whole book would have worked better if he used pretty much any other character to tell the story of what was happening in King's Landing.

The final scene of the first season is gonna be badass.

i liked cersei's pov. i think tyrions was better, but only because of his humor. her pov was very black and white...just like her character. they could have maybe done margareys? that would have been interesting i suppose.

the attention to detail is amazing..i hope the series keeps some of that and doesn't try to rush the story.

Would anyone recommend reading the books before watching?

ETA: Or would it be okay to just watch?

if you like to read at all and think you're interested in the HBO series, it's a must read. Amazing series. If the HBO series is half as good, it'll be a huge success.

Every one of my friends that I've got to read it have raved ab it. Once you get into it, it's basically crack on paper.

Echo everything Books said and highly recommend reading the books if you're at all interested in the genre or think you will watch the show. Fair warning though that he isn't through with the series yet and readers have been waiting on the next book (fifth of seven books) since 2005.

Fantasy books?

I'll watch almost any HBO series and the preview looked good... so I planned on watching.

more historical fiction/political intrigue/character driven drama/murder mystery/struggle for power w/ small elements of fantasy on the fringes of the story. I don't read fantasy, but this is probably my favorite series of fiction.

The books are technically labelled in that genre, but they don't really fit the mold of what a lot of people think of when they think of fantasy. The books have a tendency to be very dark/violent and surprising in how Martin treats some of the characters. Would suggest giving the books a shot to see if you like it. Good buddy of mine is a non-fiction/biography sort of guy who had never picked up a "fantasy" book before and was extremely skeptical at first. He is now hooked on the series and can't wait for the release of book 5.

She looks like she is going to be a great Arya.

Speaking of the books, I've found that I like AFFC more the more I read it. Especially Cersie. She's a horrible person, so it's fun seeing her blunder and call them victories.

def agree w/ this as I've said earlier in the thread. it's underrated, but gets knocked bc of how incredible ASOS was that preceeded it. really liked the glimpse of Old Town as well as seeing what happened w/ Arya.

So have all the fans of the books also read the "Dunk and Egg" short story/novellas? GRRM put a lot of background info about the Targaryens? and the Blackfyre pretenders into those. The Targ family swords, (Blackfyre and Dark Sister), and the Golden Company have been mentioned as casual asides in other books but they seem to be major storylines going forward.
