I like what they did with Pyke. As the towers come up you even get to see the unsteady bridges bouncing between them.
I'm a fan of the Iron Islands as well as HBO deftly crafted map! I agree with you, sir.

What do you suppose the message of the gear-dominated mechanistic portrayals of buildings and structures is?

I guess you could look into that somewhat. On the other hand, I simply think it's a very cool artistic way to represent each stronghold in Westeros.

How many books are there total?

In the HBO series, they do at least start each episode with a detailed map of the world. Newbs don't pay attention to this as closely as they should. That map is really important. Each episode that introduces a new region such as Dragonstone or Pyke, those places will appear on the map.
I'm still trying to figure out why Vraes Dothrak appears on the map and not another Essos City.
Maybe that will change.

A Clash of Kings (HBO Season 2)
A Storm of Swords (HBO seasons 3 & 4)
A Feast for the Crows

(two more planned)

If you have issues about certain characters not getting enough screen time, I wonder how you'll feel if (at least based on how the book sequence falls) you're beloved characters aren't featured for most of the season? In the 3rd and 4th books, some characters aren't mentioned at all, so not sure if the series will hurry storylines along or not...

This isn't a show for the casual viewer either go all in or don't bother at all

Are there books associated with this show? You haven't mentioned them enough IMO.

No, there this show isn't based on books. A shitty screenwriter hit it big with this script and HBO greenlighted it.
Side note: The screenwriter wrote the 1980s disaster of a TV show "Beauty and the Beast" starring Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton.

One thing I thought was weird about the show was that they introduced all the Stark children at the same time. Could have been more confusing if I hadn't read the books, but even Robb and Jon Snow look pretty much the same when standing next to each other.

How bad is the problem?
I think it's tough on people who just watch the show. It's incredible for readers.
Something like 150 characters were introduced in the first quarter of the first book. At first I thought it was too much, but once you see the names a few times, everything starts falling into place.

The introductory map is constantly changing.

That's what I said a few posts back. People who haven't read the books need to pay attention to the map at the beginning of each episode...

It's the 4th and 5th book, and I would imagine that HBO will combine the two and devote two seasons to them.
Someone has already gone through a created a chronological chapter guide for both books.

I havent read the books and i dont have a problem keeping up. But i also watch every episode twice, im addicted...

One thing that I find really helps is to find a detailed map online and take a few minutes to look at it. Once you figure the layout of the world, the storyline makes more sense in your head.

honestly though, I don't remember the map changing at all except for the start of season 2.
I'm pretty sure it showed the same thing every episode last year.
