In the always-evolving world of the internet, two things still seem like unshakable certainties. One is the classic Rule 34, which says, “If it exists, there is porn of it.” And the second is that if you ever come across a list of TV shows that were cancelled too soon, Paul Feig and Judd Apatow‘s short-lived 1999 comedy series Freaks and Geeks will appear on that list. Guaranteed.
There’s been all sorts of talk about a reunion or revival series in the intervening years, but now some of the people involved in the original show have confirmed that a new Freaks and Geeks documentary is coming to television next year. Get the details below.
The doc came to our attention through a tweet from series creator Paul Feig, who confirmed its existence when a fan asked if it was real:

I always loved that show and it was filled with stars. I wished they had made more episodes and it wasn't canceled.

I wish it wouldn’t have been cancelled, but it also was kind of nice the way it ended and not having to see the show slip and suffer.
Definitely ahead of its time

A documentary? Like, behind the scenes type stuff, or what?

I hope it's like that Full House docudrama where they have actors playing the actors.

one of the GOAT shows that never was. was a show that grew on you with each episode. all the characters developed very well.
I was upset when it ended after 1 season, but the more I think about it I like that it ended like that. it was basically one long movie that we got to see all characters progress.
a counter example would be a movie like Superbad. Same concept in a sense of the main characters are high school nerds who aren't that popular. The movie only has the time to focus on the main 3. Now to relate it to F&G...think if it were a show spread out amongst multiple eps. We'd get more screen time with the chicks Seth and Evan were going after. I know I'm rambling so I hope those who read this get where I'm trying to go with it haha.
Point is, I think it was a great show that left us wanting more and ending at the peak of its potential.

Basically, if they condensed Freaks and Geeks down to 1hr 45 or 2hr, it would feel a lot like Superbad. I get what you mean. I also feel like the show watches more like an extended movie than an episodic series.

Whoever made the decision to cancel Freaks and Geeks needs to have their arse kicked

Completely agree. One more season could have been good, but it benefits from not having to drag out.

It's cliché to say it was "too good" for television, particularly American television, but at the time it was true.
Television has elevated itself since those days that Freaks and Geeks and Firefly could get cancelled. A streaming service could anchor themselves off shows that good today.
The suits at the time were still locked in an old model - buzz and popularity allow you to get "better" - rather than "quality will bring viewers if you're patient." Heck, they had been getting that wrong since Star Trek (the Original Series).

I want one more season with them in their 40's

Yeah, they'd never cancel a show like Terriers today... (grumble)
Still, this is cool news. It was a great show that never found its audience because it was a little too dark for network TV. I mean, they broke the retarded kid's arm. And I still have been unable to rewatch the tryout for the band a second time, the most painfully awkward scene in TV history. I cannot do it.

There was this ironic loop where NBC eventually ignored the show, writing it off as a one season flop, which allowed the creators to keep the show realistically weird. If NBC had kept the pressure on to make the show into more of a Happy Days high school series, we might not have ended up with such a unique series.
