Most movie directors take great liberties with historical accuracy and alter the storyline of many of the books movies are based on. Nothing new there.

This would be my take as well. Costner is a bit wooden, De Niro is in late 90s Pacino mode, but Connery and Garcia are fantastic and the movie is a ton of fun.

Ironically, had Costner taken a few drinks during filming, his performance may not have been as bland.
