It's really night and day the quality difference between the first four seasons and the last four seasons.

Really, there aren't many even good episodes after the fourth season.

If someone who had never seen Dexter before asked me when to stop, I'd tell them to stop after the first episode of season 5.
I really like that episode; and if you stop there, it kind of works thematically as an epilogue where Dexter learns to feel sadness over Rita and forgive himself.

The real ending of Dexter is, by far, the worst I've seen.
It made me mad for days, and I wish I could say I was kidding.

1-4 was outstanding television and 4 is one of the best single seasons of any show I've watched

I agree with this although I didn't think season 3 was anything special. I think season 2 is great, their 2nd best season behind only season 4. From beginning to end that season was fantastic with a ridiculous amount of great twists.

It really is ashame it dropped off that hard. Has anybody read the books?
I agree with everyone in this thread, the shows were great , until they weren't. And then they were terrible.

For the most part, the books are fun but different. The first book and the first season basically tell the same story (the Ice Truck Killer) but then the books and show really have no connection; the stories are vastly different.

There's one book though that is as bad or worse than the final season of the show.

Book spoiler ahead ... if you care

I forget the name of the book, maybe Dexter in the Dark, but it's revealed in that book that Dexter's Dark Passenger is not just his sociopathic nature, but an actual demon that is possessing him.

In that book, Dexter's demon meets a demon possessing another character which is apparently a bigger bad arse than Dexter's demon. So Dexter's demon runs away and no longer possesses Dexter.

Now, without his Dark Passenger Demon to help him, Dexter is pretty pathetic and is on the verge of getting killed by the really bad arse demon dude until he (Dexter) is saved by Cody ... who is also apparently possessed by a demon. Then Dexter's demon comes back.

I hated that book so much that I stopped reading the series for a long time. I've since gone back and read a few more and just try to forget that shitty book even exists.

how the hell can a finale, a SERIES finale at that, possibly be rushed? Were they unaware it was the last episode?

what if somebody turned the tables on him? he was captured by a serial killer who only kills bad people. the show ends with him being on someone else's table.

That would have been awesome. I found myself wanting him to get away knowing that was wrong. I think it would have really been cool for Raoul (Jimmy Smits brother) to get him on the table after Raoul put everything together. Maybe Smits left a note or something. Raoul raises up and drops the knife and the screen goes black. I could have totally lived with that.

I stopped around the time jimmy smits got killed or when he killed the black cop, not sure which came last. What season was that?

I don't know if it was rushed, but I read the writers wanted to kill off Dexter at the end.

The producers at Showtime decided for some reason that Dexter should live on, like Batman.

Some have speculated that the way the show ended was a big frick you to the producers.

Agree.

Dexter was a great show.

The last season of Dexter was a complete and utter failure that should have never been filmed. It was jump the shark to it's definition.
