Faramir’s charge to Osgiliath is one of the more moving scenes in film history

He knows the plan is folly and he knows what will happen. He knows there will be a tragedy and he knows all the men under him will die. He realizes his father’s mind is weak. But he knows that Minas Tirith’s situation is is broken. And he will make a stand no matter how fool-hardy. Because he won’t stand by and do nothing while his city falls.

The scene is so interesting where Pippen is singing the beautiful song, but Denethor the Steward of Gondor is eating disgustingly with his mouth open and juice flying everywhere. Two stark contrasts

Gandalf chasing off the Nazgul allowing Faramir and the riders to return before that is one of my favorite scenes of the whole series. So underrated

It is an interesting dichotomy between the books and the movies. We all know the movie Denethor was grossly incompetent and uncaring.
In the books he's a superior military mind who wages a doomed, but brilliant, defense of the approaches to Minas Tirith and only cracks at the very end when the city walls are about to be breached and he believes he has lost both of his sons.
Don't get me wrong, it works much better to do it the way they did for the movie, it is just interesting the changes you make to a book to get the emotional beats that you need in a movie.

It’s a great scene, and I acknowledge its quality, but I think it’s a stretch to say it was one of the most moving in film history.
I argue that neither Faramir nor Denethor are established enough characters at that point in the films to make me care enough about Faramir’s attempted sacrifice. Honestly, if Faramir wasn’t even in the movies, it would not have changed the plot much. He is a minor character in the films.
For a scene to be epic in film history... it has to involve a major character in a profound way. Gandalf charging in at the end to save the day isn’t the main focus of the scene, and that’s the closest you get to main character involvement here.

I would whole heartedly disagree with that. I’d say a very high amount of the time, main characters and especially in this case Gandalf are facilitators for the narrative. Gandalf is a powerful immortal angel. I like him, but my sympathy is definitely drawn to almost everyone else more so than him.
