saw it in imax this afternoon.
all i've got to say is
.
badass constant action. cheesy moments didn't really bother me and the political themes did not take over the film at all.
the soundtrack was pumping. sharlto copley gave one of the better villain performances i have seen lately.
this film deserves to be seen in the theater. very good sci fi action movie.

Seriously? They overwhelmed the film. It was absurd. The entire movie was highlighting most of the liberal hot button issues: amnesty, open boarders, universal healthcare, the separation of the rich and poor, white people are evil, etc...
I saw it last night and even without the socialist themes being shoved down your throat it sucked. The dialogue was terrible, the accents were worse. It was like they were mixing Scottish, French, and British. Just awful. Foster was horrid and Damon can't move as well anymore. He's just not believable as an action hero anymore.
Just my .02

Why they put Jodi Foster as an authoritative political figure with a proper accent was beyond me. She seemed very out of place in the whole thing, but maybe im just used to her having the southern lesbian draw.

Well don't leave us hanging here, did she laugh?

This. I enjoyed the movie. It wasnt that great, but I was entertained.
I did love how in all of Elysium, there was 1 Indian (a Patel) and one Asian (a scientist). The rest that were shown were white.

It was like Blogkamp got a huge budget to remake District 9, and he took out all of the interesting parts and dumbed it down for the audience.
I rather liked the world building part in the beginning. It had a very Metropolis vibe with the poor multi-ethnic people slaving on earth with no real hope while the rich hang out at a cocktail party on an unbelievably beautiful estate. And I do like how the Jodie Foster character has no hesitation in outright murdering those who threatened their literal bubble (even if she does it in the oddest way possible, you'd think the station would have its own defense system and not rely on a crazy guy on the surface of earth with a missile launcher).
But the movie is most effective with a world weary Matt Damon trying to navigate the senseless bureaucracy and then helplessly have to risk his life on the job in order to keep it. The shift manager abuses his power over Damon just as the visiting CEO abuses his power over the shift manager (their conversation is great, as the CEO is more concerned about the air quality).
That's pretty much where the movie falls apart.
It becomes a pretty stupid action film which pretty much ignores the world they've set up. The film adds a cute kid for Damon to protect to artificially ratchet the tension. And let's face it, Damon's motivations aren't all that interesting anyway.
It's not a bad movie, but it's not a good one either.

I didn't particularly like the romantic sidestory either. I didn't think it was necessary.
Damon needing to get to Elysium within X days or he dies is plenty enough motivation to keep the story going. Every time it cut to the woman and the child, the whole thing just thudded to a halt.
Overall, I enjoyed the movie and don't regret paying to see it in theaters because the visuals are amazing. I just wish the story lived up to the visuals.

completely agree. I didn't buiy the romantic subplot, or the flashbacks to him as a kid, either. Just a waste of narrative right there.
I have seen in some quarters that the film is anti-technology. I completely disagree with that. The movie explicitly argues the robots will do good if allowed to. Tech is morally neutral. It is people who suck.
