First, I don’t believe Albert Brooks get stabbed. He told Gosling point blank he was about to kill him, and then he’s suddenly unprepared when he fights back? I don’t buy that for a second. Or that Gosling’s plan was to wait to get stabbed and then have his magic knife appear and stab Brooks with it.
Why is it so hard to believe the driver had a knife on him and used it when he should have? Bernie assumed driver just wanted out of it still and believed that Bernie would take the money and leave it at that.
quote:
Anyway, the only person who knows about Gosling is Brooks. He’s not going to tell the East Coast family he ripped them off, so once Gosling kills him, there is no mobster looking for Gosling. Take the frickin’ money. But let’s assume there is a mobster who knows about gosling. A) He wouldn’t know about his deal with Brooks about the girl AND B) it’s not like a bag of million dollars isn’t going to be picked up by a third party… so he never paid off the mobsters. Leaving the money behind makes no logical sense, regardless of your read on the situation.
Driver doesn't know no one's looking for him. He can only consider what Bernie told him which is that he isn't safe. He never even finds out who's money he has. Why wouldn't the east coast mob do the exact same thing Bernie tried to do when he goes to return the money to them?
quote:
And let’s not get into the fact how easy it will be for the cops to find and arrest him for 5 or 6 murders. He left a trail of evidence even Barney Fife could follow. He needs to be worried about the cops first. So, to recap – he leaves the money, fails to protect the girl by doing so, and is going to jail. None of these major plot points are addressed, and instead we get a faux “ambiguous” ending.
Has to to do with the books. The sequel was just released and what do you think happens? The east coast mob tracks driver down and tries to take revenge. As for evidence for the cops, come on.. Driver is walking around with blood on his jacket after the elevator stomping. Bernie stabs cook in the front of Nino's restaurant in front of a window in the middle of the day and leaves the bloody body there. Bernie and driver get in a knife fight in broad daylight in a parking lot of a busy restaurant. There's more than a little suspension of belief needed.

There's suspension of disbelief and then there's suspension of thinking. I'm willing to buy whatever story they tell me, but it needs to be addressed. Simply ignoring a huge issue like this isn't suspension of disbelief, it's a massive dangling plot thread. They didn't resolve the crisis. Even Fast and the Furious gave me a reason why the cops aren't looking, however inane.
So, you admit the mobsters are gonna go look for him, have no idea about Albert Brooks' deal, and want their million dollars back. Which Gosling just left in a parking lot for some dope to pick up. And you find this to be a dramatically satisfying conclusion? Mrs. Baloo and I just looked at each other and said, "WTF is this guy doing?" My three week old child then threw up. I can only assume from being forced to swallow such a cocamamie conclusion.

I never said it was the right thing to do, but driver kept trying to give the money back and look where he ended up. He just left the money with Bernie to be rid of it. Even if he did keep it to return it, who else would he go to with it? He doesn't know who's money it is and doesn't know anyone else with connections to it.
I can agree with you about addressing the police being MIA, just doesn't bother me that much since that's the way the story is told.

Maybe I am just taking this too far, but the girls husband is dead and she works at a diner as a waitress. There are quite a few scenes where you see Gosling developing a relationship with not only the girl, but the kid. Leaving that bag of money sitting there when it is obvious that the girl and her kid will (if they don't already) have money problems is kinda laughable.

"Hey, I don't know exactly who owns this money, but a lot of people have been killed over it. Here, you can have it because I love you."

Its not like he has to drop a bag of bloody money on her lap expecting her to just take it.

He already offered it to her. She didn't accept.

I don't remember that part, but that's fine...its may be a dumb thought. I'm just thinking there is absolutely no reason to leave the money.

Yeah, before they got on the elevator where he killed that guy, he told her he had the money and she could have it...then he snuck in the "I can come with you" bit all
like

And what happens, she slaps him

Yeah he was kind of an idiot when it comes to girls.

He was kind of an idiot when it came to giant bags of money, too. There was no logical reason to leave it there.
He also was an idiot when it came to doing his job, as he got his transport arrested in the first caper, and shot and killed in the second. He has a 0% success rate.

Why do you think they were arrested?

Wasn't part of the deal for them to tell them where he's taking them?
"Give me a time and a place and where you need to go" or something...can't remember the exact terms of the deal.

That's how he told Cook, anyway.

right. im assuming baloo thinks they get arrested because of him parking the car in the parking garage, throwing a clippers hat on, and walking by the cops as they pull up
I think we're supposed to assume that they get away. At least, that's what I think everyone who watches the movie thinks
